“That’sfascinating—but also really frustrating,”Samanthasaid.Shelooked up atR’orn. “Didn’tyou say you saw a man earlier?Yousaid he was standing right behind you.”

“Idon’t know whatIsaw—nothing probably.”R’ornfolded his arms over his chest. “Atrick of the light—there are so many shadows in here.”

“But—”Samanthabegan.

Justthen they all heard the clear, tinkling sound of the bell being rung down at the small reception desk in the foyer.

“Ah—my next guests have arrived soImust go,”Ms.Primrosetold them. “You’llhave to be sure to tell me what else you see ordon’tsee tomorrow morning.”

Andwith a knowing wink, she left them alone in the room which might or might not be haunted—at this point,R’ornreally didn’t know.

SAM

“Thatwas quite a tour she gave us, wouldn’t you say?”Samlooked up at the bigKindredspeculatively.Herneck was still throbbing from where he’d bitten and sucked her so savagely.

Andbe honest,Sam,whispered a little voice in her head. That’snot the only part of you that’s throbbing!”

She’dbeen so irritated with the bigKindredfor being a jerk about what she did for a living, that she hadn’t allowed herself to realize how attractive he was—but she wasdefinitelynoticing now.Yes, he was a jerk, but there was no denying that her heart had been pounding when he’d grabbed her and bent her over his muscular arm to kiss and lick and suck the vulnerable side of her throat.

Herneck had always been an erogenous zone forSam—it was almost as sensitive as her nipples and she melted when a man kissed or bit her there.Howin the world hadR’ornknown that?Andwhy had he acted the way that he had?Couldit be that the spirit ofBeauHartfordhadactuallypossessed him for a minute or two?Andmight it happen again?Could—

“Weneed to go,”R’orngrowled, breaking her train of thought.

“What?”Samasked. “Whatare you talking about?”

“I’mtalking about how there’s something wrong with this fucking room,” he growled, his golden eyes flashing. “Andwe need to leave—now.”

“Oh,Isee how it is.”Samwent over and sat on the side of the bed and looked up at him. “Youscoff at the supernatural but the minute you see or experience anything at all that shakes your disbelief, you want to turn tail and run away as fast as you can.”

“What?”R’ornhad been in the act of heading for the door, but now he turned and glared down at her. “Whatdid you just say?Didyou call me acoward?”

Samarched an eyebrow at him.

“Well, if the size twenty-two boot fits…”

“Fuckthat—Iamnotfucking afraid.”R’orncrossed his arms over his massive chest.

“Soyou’re not worried that the spirits ofBeauandCarolinemight take us over and use us for their own ends—the way the spirit ofBeaudid to you just now?”Samdemanded.

“Thatwas…Idon’t knowwhatthat was, but itwasn’ta spirit using my body,” he growled, looking perplexed. “Noneof that shit theInnkeepersaid is true—spirits aren’t real!”

“Thenprove it by staying here with me tonight,”Samchallenged him. “Ifyou’re not afraid of being possessed by a spirit and doing his will—or of seeing something that’s ‘not real’— you’ll stay right here with me.”

“Stayhere all night?”Hesounded apprehensive.

“Notonly that—if you really don’t believe the spirits will use us, then you’ll sleep beside me in this bed all night.Andof course, nothingwill happen because none of whatIdo for a living isreal—right?”

Shedidn’t know why she was taunting the bigKindred—or specifying that he had to sleep in the bed with her to prove he wasn’t afraid.Previouslyshe’d been thinking of making him sleep on the floor.Butafter that scorching neck kiss, she felt a littledifferenttowards herProtector.Thoughshe wasn’t sure she wanted to admit that, even to herself.Butthere was no denying her physical reaction to him—her nipples were tight and her pussy was wet and aching.

Also, she couldn’t pass up the chance to make him admit the supernatural world was real.Sinceshe’d met him,R’ornhad been denigrating her work and acting annoyingly superior—as though she was some crazy person he had to baby-sit while she went out hunting “ghosts.”Samreally wanted to rub his nose in the fact that what she was doing was real and valid and this seemed like a perfect way to do it.

Asfor why the spirits had chosen to show themselves toR’orninstead of to her, well—that was all right.Shecould still feel their presence in the room, even if they weren’t talking to her.

“Well?” she asked, raising an eyebrow again. “Areyou going…or staying?”

“Fine.I’llstay.”R’orncame and sat beside her on the bed—which creaked alarmingly under his muscular weight.
