I covered my mouth to hold in the cries of help.

“There’s glass on the floor, and the window is broken. Fuck! Meet me here.”

Ending the call, Gianney took slow steps, and my heart pounded as I waited for him to catch me. Coming here without any support was foolish and naive.

A loud smash startled me, followed by more loud voices, then gunshots.

“Where the fuck is my wife?” Vincenzo shouted.

Chapter 21

Vincenzo

“Boss, are you alright?”

I turned to my guard who had just gotten out of his car which was parked behind mine. “I'm fine.” I kept my composure—before cursing everybody out for letting her slip out of the club and take on Gianney herself.

After having the doctor check her vitals, I stood outside the bedroom, waiting to go in and see if she was awake.

As soon as Cassandra came to me looking for Nyla, I had the entire casino shut down to keep anyone from doing something underhanded—especially if they worked at my place of business and helped them take her. I had too much on my plate from Angelina to Gianney and Cono, thinking we’d back down and let it slide. It was shocking that they came together against a common enemy, but it was also understandable. All three were jealous of who we were, and what we’d accomplished as a cartel family and business.

Unable to hold out any longer, I turned the knob, gently shoving the door open, and I spotted Nyla, with her eyes wide.

Doctor, a long-time physician for the family, followed her gaze to me.

“Mr. Calabresi, she’s going to be fine.”

“Thank you. Can I have a moment with her?”

“Sure. Remember, she needs rest,” the doctor answered.

I cupped her hand and stroked her cheek, but she avoided eye contact. “Tell me what you’re thinking,” I said.

“You hate me.”

“If you dented my car, I could hate you, but putting yourself in danger is never an option,” I said, joking to break the mood.

Trying to sit up, she flinched at the pain. “Gianney’s my brother.”

“I know.”

“He’s using me to get under your skin.”

“I heard.”

“I overheard you were planning on killing him.”

“How do you feel about him?”

Shrugging her shoulders, she said, “Be real with me, Vincenzo.”

“Always, Nyla.”

“Where would we be if I never robbed your casino?”

I ignored her question. “Aren't you the one who told me we should leave the past there?” I was focused on her getting better and enjoying a real birthday.

“Gianney said the evidence is on a flash drive.”
