After running out, I bumped into a few women, and they congratulated me on my birthday. I put on a fake smile, then left to find Cassandra. While glancing around the club, I noticed her back in the VIP room with the other wives. Rena and I made eye contact, and I felt she knew something was up.

I sighed to keep my composure, then I went back to the VIP room to take a bottled water from the ice bucket.

“Where did you go?” Cassandra tapped me on the lap.

“Um, to the restroom. Actually, I’m not feeling well. Do you ladies mind if I leave early?”

“Do you need aspirin or food?” Rena checked.

“Probably sleep, been a long day.”

“Will walk with you out.” Sonya rose from the booth, and I waved her off.

“Promise to call you all when I get settled. Tell Vincenzo I will see him later.”

“You don’t want him to leave with you?” Rena asked.

“Uhm, he’s enjoying himself.”

“Nyla, what is going on?” Sonya and Rena folded their arms, huddled around me.

“I can't talk here.”

“All right, we can leave,” Rena said.

I raised my hand up in the sky. “No, it would look too crazy if we everybody leaves.”

“Did Vincenzo do something to you?” Cassandra chimed in. Her fists balled up.

“Cassandra, I promise to call you later.” I left a kiss on her cheek, hugged Sonya and Rena goodbye, and rushed out of the club.

After seeing Carter standing next to the car, I hid behind a group of strangers, hailed a cab, and hopped inside.

“Take me to this address please.” Lifting my phone, I showed him the address from the loose paper Gianney gave me.

“Yes, ma'am.” The cab driver hit the gas, driving out of the parking structure.

I turned off my phone to avoid any distractions. Coming over late in the evening would make Vincenzo upset with me, but Gianney gave me no choice. While leaning my head back on the car seat, I thought about Vincenzo, constantly being in the position to choose either me or his family, and I felt it might be better to leave the marriage and start over fresh in another country. His life was a nonstop roller coaster of me inserting myself and my family that had lied to me and cheated me. My mom loved a man who didn’t love her and pushed off his child to be raised by another man over a business arrangement. She and my stepdad wanted me for me; they never looked at me as a means to money.

“We’re here, ma’am.” The cab driver stopped.

I slipped $50 from my purse, handed it to him, and shut the door. I looked around the streets at a few people standing around, then I came to the door and knocked. One good thing about living with Mark was knowing how to break into a place. After walking around the side, I noticed a window, and the lights off inside. I climbed onto the garbage bin, tested the window, and saw that it was locked. After taking a rock, I tapped it gently to break the glass, then slipped my hand through, praying I wouldn't cut myself too much, then I unlocked it. After climbing in, I pushed it back down. The room was empty, and it looked to be abandoned, like the entire building. After strolling to the door, I peeked into the empty hallway. After remembering the office that he had down the hall, I sauntered toward the room, tried the doorknob, and shoved the door open.

“Look for the evidence,” I whispered to myself. Running to the desk, I pulled each drawer open, only seeing a few sheets of dates and times for visits.

“Where is he keeping the evidence?” I put my hands on my hips. There was no computer in the room, only a couch, chair, and a desk.

Before I could check, I heard loud talking coming from the front door.

“He’s out with Nyla. It’s the perfect opportunity to take her now,” Gianney’s voice growled.

Unable to hide, I grabbed my purse, slipped behind the door, and waited for him to leave.

“I have it on the flash drive. The copies will get destroyed once I know we have the alliance on our side. Fuck Calabresi Holdings. You keep trying to be one of them, and you will find yourself dead.” Gianney chuckled evilly.

I heard the footsteps stop.

“Wait, I think someone’s here,” Gianney whispered.
