“And Mark… I was so stupid.”

“Mark couldn’t do anything right, and I wish I was the one that killed him,” Cono griped.

“One thing we agree on, Uncle Cono.”

Nyla took off the safety.

Cono raised his hands in the air. “Nyla, think about what you’re doing!”

“I have.”

“Talk to her! Killing me would start a war.”

“A war you started long ago Cono,” I said.

“Nyla, give me the gun. We can talk and come up with an alternative,” Cono pleaded, trying to look around for an escape.

“I would ask you to tell my parents I love them, but we both know you’re going to hell.” Nyla’s finger pressed the trigger, blasting him repeatedly with bullets.

I slowly walked over to her, gently slipped my hand around the gun, and took it from her hands, whispering in her ear, “I’m here. I’m here.” I kissed her on the forehead.

“I shot him,” Nyla whispered in shock.

“Nyla, listen to me.”

“Vincenzo, I killed him.”

“Baby, you had no choice. He was never going to stop.”

Wiping her tears, Nyla nodded, rubbing her hands down her pants. “What about the neighbors?”

“Elio will have someone make it look like a robbery. Let’s go.”

After putting the gun away and slipping from the area, we climbed in the car with Carter. I stared at Nyla between texting with my brothers about our next moves.

Chapter 22

Nyla

I was in the bathroom, showering after having tossed my clothes in the trash. Vincenzo stood at the bathroom door, watching me rinse off the suds.

Carter had run through as many lights as he could to get us back home and away from the scene.

Killing Cono gave me a weird feeling. I kept switching from not caring to becoming a little upset that he pushed me to make that decision. Cono had to have the last word and make my husband out to be the bad guy, when all along, he and Gianney were trying to destroy us. Turning off the water, he held a large bath towel in his hands for me to grab. Removing my shower cap, I walked to the sink and brushed my teeth, and moisturized my skin. My stomach growled, reminding me I hadn't eaten since earlier in the morning.

Feeling strong hands around my waist, a longing set of eyes captured my gaze.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I have.”

Running a hand up my shoulder, around my neck. “You're still shaking, Nyla.”

“My first time using a gun.” Turning in his hold, I faced him.

“It was a decision you didn't have to make.”

“You took care of Angelina; it was only right I handled my uncle.”
