She shrugged. “You seem young to be running a casino.”

“My age is not your concern,” I said coolly.

Nyla’s eyes narrowed. “Angelina may let you talk to her like that, but I won’t.”

Our gazes clashed and held in a stare-off as the car stopped outside Nyla’s place.

“Thank you for the ride,” she said, reaching the door handle.

Acting instinctively, I leaned across to block her from leaving. Her head whipped around, and she scowled at me.

“My personal life is none of your business.”

“Glad you made that clear. Can I go now?” Nyla raised an eyebrow.

I moved back, and she stepped out, slamming the door.

Carter waited for her to walk inside the building before pulling off. “She’s different.”

“Don’t get used to her.”

My phone vibrated in my hand.

Angelina: Are you coming over?

Me: No.

Angelina: Why not?

Me: Focus on doing your job, not me.

I sighed. I could be an asshole like Renato when it came to women, but Angelina was a different story. Our clashes were frequent because she wanted to be known as “my girl,” the untouchable future wife of Vincenzo Calabresi. I told her it would never happen and that I understood if she couldn't settle for a purely sexual relationship, but years later, she still thought I would change my mind, and I was growing tired of her demands.

Angelina: I apologize for earlier.

Me: Thanks.

Angelina: Can I make it up to you?

Me: Go to sleep.

I needed to figure out why I found Nyla so intriguing.

I let Carter go for the night when we finally arrived at my place. Entering, I turned off the alarm in my three-story home. Having a finger in the real estate market, I’d secured the land to build this place how I wanted—a home that would be mine forever. I had a place closer to the offices but liked coming here at the end of the week to relax and get away.

The Greek marble floors were shipped from overseas. Mom loved helping me decorate because she felt it needed a woman’s touch. I’d ensured that my “palace” had enough space for my family to stay if needed. It had indoor and outdoor pools, nine bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, a theater, a man cave, a library, and my office.

I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge before heading to my bedroom to shower and fall into bed.

Chapter 4

Nyla

While hurrying from the employee lounge, I carried a few empty trays to load up on chips. Getting the hang of working at a casino wasn’t too hard—except for the people who lost, got drunk, and yelled at us all night. While rushing from the breakroom, I padded through the halls toward the main floor, watching a few laughing employees come through the door. While keeping my head down, I strolled into the back of the cashier counter, placing my badge back in my pocket.

“Hey, girl.” Eunice, one of the longtime cashiers, finished with a customer and focused on me.

“Hey, Eunice. Busy today?”
