Murmuring that I’d catch up with Eunice later, I followed the guard, who escorted me to Vincenzo’s office and left me outside his office.

“What are you doing here?” Angelina demanded with a glare as she exited his office.

“Mr. Calabresi sent for me.”

Angelina huffed as she sat behind her desk. Ignoring her tantrum, I edged into Vincenzo’s office and waited for him to speak.

“You sent for me?” Even with my slow and even breathing, my nerves sizzled as his gaze took a lingering sweep of my body.

“I need you to sign these papers.”

I approached the desk and glanced at the forms in front of him. Clearing my throat, I asked, “I’m being promoted?”

His steely jawline clenched. “Sign it before I change my mind.”

“But… why? I’m still new.”

“You’ve made a good impression on the team and the customers.”

I moistened my lips with my tongue, and his eyes dilated as they followed the movement.

He’s not interested.

It would be a disaster.

Standing to his full height, he moved around to lean against the front of his desk. “You’ll receive a raise and be the lead cashier on the floor.”

“What’s the catch?”

The corner of his mouth twitched. “I run a tight ship, and when I see someone working hard, I reward them.” Vincenzo reached behind him for the papers and held them out to me with a pen.

A jolt of electricity arced up my arm as I took the pen, and our eyes connected. “That’s all?”

“Is there something else you’d like?” He tilted his head, and his words sounded like a challenge.

Playing games with my boss would only lead to trouble. Like I’d told Eunice, I loved my boyfriend.

“No. I-I’ll sign the papers,” I stammered, then did so and passed them back to him.

“Enjoy an extra 20 minutes of your lunch break since I brought you up here.”

“Oh, that’s not necessary.”

“I insist, Nyla.”

The sound of my name on his lips raised my pulse. “Thank you, Mr. Calabresi.”

I rushed away, leaving his office door open and ignoring Angelina’s death stare.

I needed to get control of my emotions and remind myself why I was at the casino.

I was tense and irritable. On my way home, I ran out of gas a few blocks from the casino. Not wanting to be stranded again, Mark had agreed to let me use his car. However, he’d forgotten to mention that it was low on gas. I had yet to receive a paycheck, so I couldn't pay for it. My phone was out of battery, so my only choice was to walk home.

I looked up as a familiar SUV approached and pulled up beside me. The window slid down.

“It’s a little late to be out here by yourself,” Vincenzo said coolly.

“My car ran out of gas.”
