Cassandra gave the vest a thumbs up. “But?”

“But nothing. She thinks I want her man, which is untrue. I’m happy with Mark.”

Cassandra’s eyes narrowed. “How are things with Mark?”

“Fine.” I held up a pair of silk shirts.

“Good. I know he went MIA for a few weeks.” Cassandra draped two dresses over her arm and sauntered to the dressing room.

“He’s busy working, but we’re much closer than before...” I shrugged, letting my words trail off.

“…before the cheating,” Cassandra finished, poking her head from the dressing room.

“I forgave him.” I dropped my gaze so she wouldn’t see the doubt in my eyes.

She came out of the room, smoothing her hands over the dress and turning in front of the mirror. “You’ve been working there for two months now, right?”

I shook my head to indicate she should try the other dress. “Almost three.”

“I’m proud of you. Any word from your uncle?”

She knew I hated talking about my uncle. He was the reason I had to work since he’d cut me off financially. “No, and before you bring it up, Mark is not keeping me from my family.”

My phone rang, and I pulled it from my purse to see Mark’s name. A smile touched my lips as I answered. “Hey, baby.”

“Hi, Mark!” Cassandra yelled.

“Are you ready for tonight?” Mark asked.

I took the call off speakerphone. “I am. Can I call you back later?”

“Fuck, Cassandra. We have business to sort out,” Mark grunted.

My heart skipped a beat as I moved to a private corner. The people Mark owed had told him his time was up, and they were ready to collect. It was going to happen tonight. All I had to do was open a door and let them do the rest.

“Relax, or Cassandra will hear you. I have everything worked out.”

“We only get one chance, Nyla.”

“I know, baby.” Sighing, I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes.

“Once we get the money, we can leave. Get married,” Mark promised.

“Really?” I perked up.

“I pay these people off, and we're in the clear. Calabresi won't miss the money,” Mark muttered.

“Okay. I need to go. Cassandra’s waiting on me.” I ended the call and stood, spotting Cassandra at the front counter, paying for her clothes.

“Lunch?” Cassandra asked as I reached her. “I’m starving.”

Nodding, I put the blue dress I’d chosen on the counter to pay. “Lunch, and then I have work later.”

“Boo, you work too much,” Cassandra teased.

We chose a restaurant close to the casino so I could walk to work afterward and clock in for the night. Cassandra sat across from me, scanning the menu, and I asked the server to bring us drinks while we decided.

Cassandra scanned the restaurant. “My first time here.”
