I put my food in my locker in the employee lounge, plastered on a smile, and headed for the cashier counter.

Four hours later, I took my break, heading to the back entrance, which led to an alley that no one used.

My phone vibrated, and I answered Mark’s call, keeping my voice low. “Hey, babe.”

“You ready?”

My fingers clenched around the phone, scanning the area. “Are you sure about not hurting anyone?”

“Only if we have no choice. I have to protect myself, Nyla,” Mark rasped.

I bit my lip. “How close are you?”

“Pulling up now.”

I pressed my palm to my forehead. “It’s almost one a.m. Not much foot traffic, so you have an easy entry.”

“Nice job, baby. Go back to work before you’re missed,” Mark instructed.

“Okay. Love you.” I sent a prayer that everything would be over quickly.

“You, too.” He hung up.

I repocketed my phone and headed back to my counter. It was just me, the guard, and one other girl working tonight. She took her break once I got back, and I flashed a wide grin at the guard.

“You're working late tonight,” he observed.

“You know I work late, Roger.”

He rubbed a hand over his beard. “Maybe you and I can get a coffee later.”

I winked at him. “Maybe.”

His eyes ballooned wide, and his hands flew up in the air as the barrel of a gun pressed to the back of his head.

“Be quiet and do as we say,” a raspy voice instructed.

“Do you know who owns these premises?” Roger growled.

The man behind him raised his gun and smashed it against his head.

I jumped back in shock as three more gunmen appeared and covered the cameras. They wore uniforms like mine.

“Where’s your badge?” Mark demanded.

I handed it off. “You remember the code?”

“Yeah. Stay close. We have five minutes to get in and out.”

The other men pulled Roger’s body out of the way and moved to the safe. No sooner had they emptied it than an alarm went off.

“Fuck!” Mark cursed.

Security had somehow been alerted and were heading toward us. Turning, we ran for the back entrance to the alley where a van was waiting.

“How much did you get?” I panted.

“Enough. You did good, baby.” Mark captured my lips.
