I rubbed the sting away, glaring at him.

“Where is Nyla now?” Elio asked as we headed to the cars.

“I put her in the trunk.”

My brothers stopped walking and turned to gawp at me.

“You locked her in the trunk?” Savio demanded.

I shrugged. “I needed to ensure she wouldn’t run.”

Moaning and screaming came from the trunk. Renato stalked over and popped it open. Nyla was handcuffed, gagged, and tied up.

“Get her out of the trunk,” Savio snapped.

“Why?”

“We don’t treat women like that.”

“Weren’t you the one almost ready to kill Mckayla? And Renato dragged Sonya from a hotel when he found out about his son,” I reminded him.

Savio fisted my shirt and said through clenched teeth, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth.”

“Savio, come on. He didn’t mean it.” Elio tried to calm him down.

I never backed down from anyone, including my brothers. Was I wrong for bringing up their wives? Maybe. But anyone who crossed us had to pay.

I glanced at Nyla, seeing her eyes widen. “Get her out of the trunk.”

Savio released me. Going to his car, I opened the passenger door. Nyla climbed into the backseat with a guard on either side of her. I heard her sniffling as I yanked my seatbelt on.

“Your tears can't help you.”

She clasped her hands in her lap. “Are you going to kill me?”

“Yes, if I don’t get my money back.”

We drove toward the city. Elio had given me the address of a bar where the loan shark Mark owed was located.

“I-I know you don’t trust me… but my uncle is the only person I know who has that kind of money. He could give you the money, but he won’t make it easy. He probably won’t pay at all,” Nyla said haltingly.

“I’ll take my chances. Call him. Put it on speaker.” I gestured to my guard to give Nyla his phone.

We arrived at the bar as we waited for the call to go through,

“Who is this?” A gravelly voice demanded.

“Uncle Cono?” Nyla asked hesitantly.

“Nyla?”

She bit her lip. “Uncle Cono, I need your help.”

I took the phone from her. “Cono Sartori, you're talking to Vincenzo Calabresi.”

Chuckling was heard on the other end. “Vincenzo! What is the point of this call?”

My gaze fell on Nyla, who was staring blankly out the window. “Five million dollars.”
