“How am I supposed to know an employee's social life?”

“Nyla will be out of police custody by the morning, and I have guys waiting at the station,” Elio said as he entered the kitchen.

Rena’s mouth dropped open as she looked from Elio to me to Sante. She was three seconds away from hounding us until we confessed.

“Sante, if you ever want to get in my bed again, you better tell me what’s going on,” Rena stated.

“Not my business.” Sante threw his hands up.

“Who is Nyla?” Madre asked, helping my nephew off the stool.

I watched as he ran from the kitchen. “No one.”

“A girl he hired three months ago. You’d love her,” Rena said.

Mother rinsed her glass in the sink. “Why is she missing or in jail?”

I sighed. “It’s nothing for you to worry about.”

Rena pointed at me and then Sante. “Talk, or I’ll find out for myself.”

I shrugged. “Go find out.”

“Fine by me. Mckayla still has some pull at the police station.” Rena stuck her tongue out.

Sante grabbed her before she could get away and lifted her onto the island. “We’re here to have a family dinner.” Sante dared Rena with his eyes.

Eyeing him, Rena blushed, caressing his cheek. Suddenly, she gripped it hard. “Talk, or no goodies for you.”

“She robbed Vincenzo, and he had her kidnapped,” Sante blurted.

Elio bowed his head, knowing Cora would be next to ask about Nyla. She’d met all the wives, and they’d hit it off.

Madre turned to me. “You kidnapped someone, Vincenzo?”

“You know I never discuss business, Madre.”

She gave me a steely look. “I’m your mother, and I want to know what you’re doing.”

“Stay out of my business.”

She gasped and slapped me across the face. Her hands flew to her mouth, and her eyes widened in shock. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean—”

“Stop treating me like a kid and trying to control my life! I’m twenty-five and run two successful businesses!” I shouted, stalking from the room.

Rena caught up with me. “Vincenzo, wait.”

“What now, Rena? Haven’t you done enough?”

She held her hands up. “I come in peace. What happened with Nyla?”

I laced my arms over my chest. “She robbed the casino, and I killed her boyfriend in front of her.”

“Oh, my God. She must be terrified.”

“Terrified? She knew exactly what she was doing.”

Rena saw goodness in everybody. “She’s young, Vin. I’ve been where she is, with the bad boy who gets in your head.”
