“Not me.”

Rena sighed. “Maybe I can help.”

“No.”

“Listen to me. Mckayla, Sonya, and Cora are the only ones who can understand Nyla’s current mindset. She’s scared and confused, and her being in police custody is bad for our family.”

“Her family is connected, Rena.”

Rena frowned. “What do you mean? She told me her parents died when she was young.”

I barked a laugh at her lies. “Her uncle is Cono Sartori, a mob boss with whom we have no relationship or leverage. This will end badly for Nyla if he doesn't return my money.”

Rena’s eyes widened. “You can't be serious?”

“I’m very serious.”

“Let me talk to her first.”

I blew out a frustrated breath. “Do I have a choice?”

A cocky grin spread across Rena's face. “Nope.” Before I could reply, she hugged me. “Admit it. I’m your favorite sister-in-law.”

“Never.” I laughed at her harsh glare but let her drag me back into the kitchen.

Chapter 7

Nyla

I cursed myself for running to the police for help. Now, I was wearing handcuffs, and my hair was all over the place. They interrogated me all night, trying to get answers about who I was running from. I thought about giving up Vincenzo and his family but couldn’t be sure he didn’t have the police in his back pocket. The cops took my prints and conducted a background check, which revealed my true name.

I went from needing help to being a possible mafia hit. At twenty-two, my life wasn’t how I’d hoped.

The little money I could borrow from Cassandra wouldn't get me far enough away from this mess.

Heat flushed my cheeks when I finally stepped out of the police station to find Rena and Vincenzo waiting. My shoulders slumped. I prepared myself to face the music and was surprised when Rena pulled me into a hug.

She dressed in a light pink silk blazer and black pants suit. “How are you feeling?”

“Exhausted,” I said, seeing Vincenzo’s disdainful look over Rena’s shoulder.

Rena pulled back to look at me. “Vincenzo explained everything.”

I tensed. I’d grown fond of Rena and didn’t want her to think badly of me. “About the money?”

“Hey, you have nothing to be afraid of,” Rena said as Vincenzo climbed into the waiting car.

Tears threatened my eyes. “He hates me.”

Rena sighed. “You're not his favorite person right now. What were you thinking?”

“Mark needed help.”

“So, you steal from my family?” Rena pressed.

I bit my top lip. “Listen, Rena. I didn’t ask you to come down here.”

“True, but I thought we were friends. You could’ve come to me.”
