“No, I couldn’t.”

“Mark is dead, Nyla. You need help.”

“I’ll be fine.”

Rena bit back a laugh. “God, you’re stubborn like Vincenzo.”

I didn’t like being compared to him. “He’s a jackass.”

Rena opened the door. “Get in the car.”

“I called a friend,” I lied. Cassandra had no clue where I was. I’d been in a holding cell for hours with people who had committed murder. God, my parents would be so disappointed in me.

“That’s a lie, and Vincenzo promised not to do anything to you.” Rena turned to look at him.

His face was expressionless, showing no sign of the damage I’d caused.

Knots coiled in my belly. “How can you be so sure?”

She frowned. “I trust him, and he’s sweet when he wants to be.”

“When will that side of him come out exactly?”

Rena threw her head back and laughed.

The car window rolled down, and Vincenzo poked his head out. “What the fuck is taking so long?”

“We’re coming. Hold your horses,” Rena muttered, climbing into the backseat. She slid over to make room for me.

I eyed the guards on either side of the car. “Where are you taking me?”

“None of your business,” Vincenzo bit out.

Rena sucked in a breath. “Vincenzo, you promised to be a little less rough with her.”

“Promises are meant to be broken,” Vincenzo said sharply.

“Are you taking me back to the warehouse? I’d rather you took me to jail again.” I confessed.

Rena gasped in shock and leaned toward Vincenzo in the passenger seat. “You locked her in the warehouse?”

Vincenzo slammed his hand on the dashboard. “Stay out of my business. She’s our enemy.”

Rena’s mouth tightened. “Nyla, you can stay with me.”

His eyes burned furiously. “No, she can’t.”

“She’s not going back to the warehouse,” Rena insisted.

They argued back and forth for a few minutes before Vincenzo blew out a harsh breath. “She can stay at my condo in the city.”

“Is she going to be safe with you?” Rena’s eyes narrowed.

“If I wanted her dead, I could do it right now.” He snapped his fingers. “Sante has told you plenty of times to stay out of our cartel business.”

Rena raised a challenging eyebrow. “You could always let her go. I’m sure she’s learned her lesson.”

I appreciated Rena fighting on my behalf, but she was right. I’d learned my lesson, and I wasn’t about to do it a second time. “Rena, it’s fine. I can stay with him.”
