“The first trust fund of one million was used to provide for you after their death. The second trust fund can only be accessed when you are married,” Uncle Cono explained.

“Which isn’t your decision to make!” I snapped.

“I suggest you show me the respect I deserve, Nyla.” Uncle Cono pointed his finger in my face.

I felt nauseous. “I need to get out of here.”

“You’re not going anywhere,” Vincenzo growled, preventing me from leaving.

Tears warmed my cheeks. My life was imploding around me.

Vincenzo slipped his hands into his pockets, his eyes cold. “Mark is dead. Your niece will be next—unless my money is returned to me.”

Chapter 8

Vincenzo

“Nyla, wait outside. I want to talk privately with Vincenzo,” Cono instructed.

His bloated face was flushed at the idea of pawning his niece. He thought he had the upper hand. He was a fool if he thought he could manipulate me. Cono would live to regret denying me my money.

My fists clenched in my pockets. If there was even a hint that Cono was trying to cross me, I’d put a bullet through his skull.

“Step out for a moment with Romo.”

Nyla slowly stood, and the guard escorted her from the office. The other guard remained by the door.

Cono opened his desk drawer, and my hand moved to my gun holster. He removed a file and threw it on the desk. “Something you might want to see.”

“I’m not here to play games, Cono.”

“Nyla is more valuable than you think.”

I picked up the file and scanned the documents inside. My eyes narrowed into slits as I viewed the photographs of Savio at the scene of Viviana Greco’s murder. It had been a few years since the incident, but Savio’s ex-girlfriend’s death still haunted our family.

“Why should I believe these are real?”

“Doesn’t matter. The contents of that file could hurt your family.”

“Are you blackmailing me?”

Cono ignored my question. “It’s a shame our families have never done business. You can change that so we both profit.”

“Who knows about these pictures?”

“A few people. I kept it hidden to protect my interests.”

“Your interests?”

“You may have the governor’s ear, but she can’t prevent your family from being indicted for double homicide—not to mention murdering my niece’s boyfriend.”

Cono was giving me no choice but to kill him before I left—but first, I needed to know how he came upon those pictures. Savio hadn’t thought about Viviana in years and was happily married to Mckayla.

“Tell me what you want, and I’ll decide whether I agree.”

“Marry Nyla, and you’ll have access to her trust fund to pay off her debt.”

“And you get what?”
