I chuckled at his delusion. “I have no say in who sits at the table with the other families.”
Cono smiled. “Come now, I’m sure underestimating your influence. Nyla will do what I say. You can annul the marriage after the funds clear. We all win.”
“Savio manages the cartel’s business.”
Cono raised a hand. “I’m certain you can convince him to give me a place. As you know, my business hasn’t fared too well lately.”
“Not our problem.”
He exhaled in frustration. “You know, Vincenzo, your father was selfish when it came to allowing others to make money.”
I stepped closer to his desk. “Leave my family out of this discussion.”
“Marry Nyla, get the money, and give the Sartori cartel a seat as the sixth family.”
“The cartel works with perfectly well five families.”
“Perhaps it’s time to expand.”
“I need all the evidence before I’ll consider talking to my brothers.”
Cono sat in his chair. “You have twenty-four hours to get back to me. Now, I need to speak to my niece alone.”
I turned to leave his office, yanking the door open.
Nyla jumped in fright. “What do you want?”
“What I want is for you not to fuck me over again, or you won’t leave here alive.”
I pushed her into her uncle’s office and closed the door before reaching for my phone.
Me: We have a problem.
Savio: Are you alone?
Renato: Send me your address.
Elio: Call me.
Me: I’m with Cono.
Savio: Did he give you the money?
Me: No, and I’m ready to put a bullet in his head.
Elio: We already have Renato killing people when he’s bored. You need to stay calm.
Me: He’s saying Nyla and I have to get married.
Savio: Call me.
Renato: Three-way call?
Me: What do we do about the Greco family?
