“Tell me. Whatever you need, I’m here for you.”

“Thank you. Mark and I did something stupid.”

My hands fell from her grasp. “What did you do?”

“I helped Mark rob the casino where I worked.” I spoke low.

“What?” she shouted.

“Keep your voice down,” I muttered, aware that the guards were watching our every move.

Cassandra shook her head and whispered, “Did I hear you right? You robbed a casino?”

“Mark needed to pay off a debt, and I foolishly helped him.”

“Nyla, of all the things in the world I expected, that wasn’t it.”

“There’s more.”

“Oh, God. Please don’t tell me he’s dead.”

“He’s dead.”

Her eyes widened in shock.

“Vincenzo sent his men to our apartment and kidnapped us.”

“How much did you take?”

I lowered my eyes at her look of disappointment. “Five million.”

“Five million?” she hissed.

“Vincenzo killed Mark right in front of me, Cassandra.”

“Nyla, what were you thinking?”

“I wasn’t, that’s the problem. Helping Mark was all I thought about.”

“He always got you involved in his shit,” she spat.

“I know that now, and thinking back, I should’ve seen the signs the first time he cheated.”

“Did you give the money back? Can you go home now?”

“No, that’s why I asked to meet with you.”

I wouldn’t blame my best friend if she hated me after confessing my sins. Falling for Mark had only brought me pain and hurt the people I loved. Cassandra was the only true friend I had left in the world.

Her palm tightened around my wrist. “Vincenzo threatened to kill you if you don’t give the money back?”

“Yes.”

“Then give it to him.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“What do you mean?”
