“I never saw any of the money; Mark and his accomplices had it. I know it was stupid, but I just wanted him to pay off his debt so we could move on.”

“How much was his debt?”

I sipped my water to ease my dry mouth. “One million as far as I know.”

“But he stole five million.” She pointed out the obvious.

“Please, Cassandra. Judge me later and let me explain the rest.”

“There’s more? Shit, Nyla.”

I nodded, grasping the glass of water. “Uncle Cono is forcing me to marry Vincenzo.”

Cassandra exhaled in surprise. “Why?”

“To get my trust, which is allegedly thirty million. I’ll give Vincenzo his half, and I can leave with the rest.”

“So marry him,” she said in a hushed but firm tone.

“We can’t be in the same room without cursing each other out. Besides, I think my uncle is lying.”

“About the money?”

“Yes, and other things. He told me I was adopted. He’s not my biological uncle, but he’s forcing me to go ahead with the marriage to get the money.”

Cassandra fanned herself. “My god, your life is like a scary soap opera.”

Now the truth was out, I was even angrier at my parents for not being honest with me. Not knowing my birth father and my real family hurt.

Movement caught my eye as a woman entered the cafe. She made a beeline for one of the guards.

“Carter, what are you doing here?” she asked, hugging him.

Carter was my guard and driver. We’d talked a little during the past few days, and he seemed like a decent guy. Compared to Vincenzo's rough, aggressive attitude, Carter was older and kinder, making me feel safe.

“Hey, Miss Cora. We're here on business,” Carter replied, glancing at me. “Are you here alone?”

Cora pointed at the black SUV parked outside. “No. I’m grabbing a coffee before I head into the clinic. I thought this place was closed for a second, and then I saw you inside.”

He nodded and headed to the counter.

“Hi, I’m Cora.” She waved at me.

I returned her gesture hesitantly. “Hi, I’m Nyla, and this is my best friend, Cassandra.”

“Nice to meet you. I think Rena told me about you. Elio is my fiancé.”

Hearing Rena’s name eased my nervousness. “Elio is the lawyer, right?’

Cora nodded. “That’s him. Short dark hair and a mustache.”

“It’s hard keeping up with who’s who. I think the blond brother, Renato, hates me.” I declared.

Cora laughed. “Renato hates everybody.”

“Are you a doctor?” I inquired, recalling her comment about returning to the clinic.

“Veterinarian,” Cora answered.
