“Nyla, the Calabresi family has connections everywhere. Why put yourself in a bigger bind?”

Groaning, I buried my head in my hands. “Cassandra, please. I need your help. I won't ask for anything again.”

Cassandra stared at me for a long time before finally nodding. “All right. How do you want to do this? And please don’t tell me you have no idea.”

I smiled, already feeling better. “Well, I think when I get back to the condo, you can follow me.”

A knock on the door had us both jumping in panic.

“Nyla, are you all right?” Carter asked.

I stepped up to the door. “Fine, Carter. Give me five minutes.”

“That was close,” Cassandra muttered.

I needed Cassandra to trust me. If I could get to the safe in my closet, I had a little money stashed there—if Vincenzo and his people hadn’t already found it.

Chapter 10

Vincenzo

Carter checked in and told me Nyla and Cassandra were leaving the cafe, mentioning that Cora had stopped in and introduced herself. I wanted to get back to the condo to ensure nothing fishy had happened. Cora was sweet and saw the goodness in everyone. It would be best if she kept her distance from Nyla. My desire to kill her had decreased with each passing day.

Running the money through the counter machine, Renato packed it up in the bag, and I marked off everyone we had to collect from for the month.

“Do you plan to attend the car line-up?” Renato asked, pulling me from my thoughts.

Sitting in the basement of Calabresi Holdings, I’d finished a few minutes earlier when he came in and needed to check the drop-offs.

“Yeah, I’m interested in a few.”

I bought and sold limited edition classic cars as well as managing the casino. Growing up, I had a passion for working and fixing up cars. While the other kids were hanging out and drinking, I was learning the family business and studying the luxury cars my father brought home.

“How many are you expecting to buy?” Renato asked, lifting the next bag.

“Two classic Lamborghinis.”

The door opened, and Elio stepped inside. He slapped my back and shook Renato's hand. “How’s it going?” he investigated, placing his things on the table.

“We have four bags; two checked out at two million,” I replied, watching our counter lift another stack onto the scale.

Elio nodded and looked at me. “I’ve been thinking about your situation.”

“Talking me out of killing Cono won’t help.”

“She’s not worth marrying. Let me put her out of her misery, along with her uncle,” Renato said with a scowl. “We can make back the money she stole in twenty-four hours.”

“Sonya must have pissed you off today.” I taunted him.

“Why is Nyla still alive? A mistake is putting the wrong gas in a car. Stealing money from my family is a death sentence,” Renato stated.

Renato hated that Nyla had gotten close to his wife after stealing from our family. He wanted nothing to do with her. It reminded him of how Sonya had stolen from him before he found out about his son.

Elio shrugged. “Don’t use your past with Sonya against Vincenzo.”

My phone rang, and I grabbed it from the table. “Carter, tell me she hasn’t run off.”

He sighed. “Sir, she tried, but I stopped her.”
