“Rena’s overstepping.”

Sante bumped my shoulder. “Relax. I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

Sante handed me his phone.

I took it from him and watched a video of Cono and another man talking outside my brother’s club. “Who is he talking with?”

“We’re still trying to identify him through a database at the police station.” Sante took the phone back.

“Cono is fucking with my money,” I muttered.

“I agree. Savio is on his way. We think marrying her and keeping Cono close would be wise.”

Angry and frustrated, I threw my hands up in the air. “Come on, Sante.”

“Cono has too many secrets, and his niece is the key to discovering what he’s up to.”

“They don’t even get along.”

“Make her.”

“And my money?”

“Still a priority. Nyla can help us get the evidence he’s holding, plus the money.”

“Nobody will believe I’m getting married.”

“Make it believable. You wanted to get into the cartel business, so here’s your chance to prove you can manage it,” Sante said, leaving me alone.

Marrying Nyla was the only option to get what we needed at the cost of my personal life crashing down around my ears. I shouldn’t have to take on the responsibility of a wife.

“Fuck!” I shouted, kicking the back of the chair.

I passed the kitchen as I went to use the bathroom and heard Nyla and my mother talking. I paused outside the door.

Madre handed Nyla a glass of juice. “You’re very beautiful, Nyla.”

“Thank you, Mrs. Calabresi.”

“My sons have kept you a secret from me. My daughter-in-law said you deserved a second chance.”

“Honestly, I’m shocked to still be here,” Nyla responded.

“So, you robbed my son’s casino?” Madre challenged.

“Yes,” Nyla whispered.

“For your boyfriend, I understand,” Madre continued.

Nyla nodded. “Stupid, I know.”

“Men make you feel like the only way to be special in their lives is to go off a cliff for them to prove your loyalty. But you know something, Nyla?” Madre paused at Nyla’s questioning look. “Loyalty should be to yourself before anyone else. Your boyfriend didn’t love or respect you because a real man would never put you in that situation.” Madre echoed the same thoughts I had about Nyla’s situation.

After finishing in the bathroom, I returned to the dining room to find everybody seated at the table.

“You were late, Vincenzo. Where were you?” Madre asked.
