“Go shower and get dressed,” I told her. “We’re going to dinner.” Dinner with my parents would be better than remaining here.

“Where?” Nyla asked.

“With my family.”

Her eyes widened. “Seriously?”

“Time is running out, Nyla. My patience with you is wearing thin. Now, go shower and get dressed,” I repeated.

“Is Cassandra okay? You won’t hurt her, will you?” Nyla challenged.

“Should I hurt her? I mean, you lied to me and tried to escape.” I took a bold step closer, trying to get in her face.

Nyla backed up. “Cassandra only did what I asked,” she pleaded.

“Then I suggest you behave, or Cassandra will end up like Mark,” I said softly before stalking to my room to shower and change.

Renato and Elio left before us to handle the guard who’d disrespected my home by putting their hands on Nyla. I’d threatened Nyla plenty of times, but I was the only one who enforced my threats and no one else.

My thoughts ran rampant as I sat in the back of the town car. Nyla and I hadn’t spoken since getting in the car. As usual, roadworks set our travel time back by ten minutes, and Madre blew up my phone twice for being late. Nyla sat as far away from me as possible, biting her nails.

“Nervousness is not a good look on you,” I taunted, laughing when she rolled her eyes. I knew being a jerk would bring out the fighter in her.

“If I help you get the papers from my uncle, will you let me go?”

“It’s not that easy.”

“I don’t see why. I sign off, and you take the money and leave me alone.”

“What if the clause says I have to wait thirty days before I get my money? Then what?”

Nyla opened her mouth to reply but was distracted as we passed through the gates to my parents' place. “You live here?” Her astonishment was palpable.

I nodded to let Carter know I would help Nyla out of the car. “It’s the family home.”

“Why am I here?”

“Seems your little game worked. My mother wants to meet you.”

“What game?”

“Nyla, stop acting innocent. Rena and Cora are your biggest supporters.”

She smirked as I guided her up the steps to the front door. “Cora and Rena are nice. Their husbands, not so much.”

Laughing at her, I removed her jacket as Sante and Rena came into view.

“About time. Nyla, I heard about today,” Rena said, glaring at me.

“Hi, Rena,” Nyla greeted.

“Glad you came to dinner.” Rena grabbed Nyla by the hand.

I jumped in front of them. “She’s not here on a friendly visit.”

“Vinny, move,” Rena sassed.

“Bro, let her go. We need to talk.” Sante grabbed and shoved me toward the dining room.
