“Keep her safe!” I removed my gun, directing Carter and Romo to get her back to the car, I went looking for my friends. Shoving through, I saw Gianney tapping his men on the arm to cover him.

“Vin!” Custant called my name, I rushed toward him, covering him as he reloaded.

“Who the fuck is shooting?” I hissed.

“Has to be a rival cartel out here, they know we have the block covered.”

“Cartel or someone.” I eyed the smirk on Gianney’s face.

“Fuck! Too many innocent bodies out here.”

“I need to call my brothers.”

“Renato’s going to be pissed.”

“He’s not the only one,” I shot back, hitting someone on the shoulder.

Sirens blared in the distance. I tapped him on the back, motioning that we needed to get out of there. While jogging back to our cars, people were crying and consoling each other. After tucking my gun away, I ambled back to my Bentley. I saw Nyla standing outside, pacing back and forth.

“Vincenzo!” Nyla rushed me, wrapping her arms around my neck, sobbing in tears.

Rubbing her back gently, I shot daggers at Carter and Romo. They shrugged, not having a clue. The tears flowed down her cheeks as I lifted her arms away from me, gently wiping them away. Unthinkingly, I placed my lips on top of hers, wanting to reassure her that I was fine and to calm her down.

“I’m fine.”

Her tongue slipped over my lips. She tightened her grip on my neck and moaned, closing the gap between us.

Hearing a throat clear, I took a step back, remembering we weren’t alone.

“Sorry,” I said.

“Are you hurt?”

“No, we need to get out of here.” I opened the door, motioning for Custant and Pirtinaci to call me.

“What happened back there?” Nyla hopped in, unlocking my side of the car. Carter and Romo waited for me to take off before moving.

“Your friend thought it would be a good idea to shoot at me.”

“Gianney?”

“Yeah, do you have any other friends I should worry about?’ I didn’t mean to bark at her, but it was time for her to realize people she knew had no interest in her safety.

“I can’t believe it.”

A few blocks away, we turned off the road. As I shifted into park, I turned my attention to her. She stared at me with her chin raised.

“Nyla, you’re not as innocent as you like to think you are, but the people you're surrounded with would leave you to the worst enemies of the world.”

“I got it, Vincenzo,” she growled, hating to be chastised.

“Stop acting like a little girl and realize Gianney, Mark, and Cono will do anything to use you for power and money.”

“I know,” she mumbled, putting her head down.

“Look at me.”

“I said you’re right.”
