“Yeah, I thought since you had to work, and the guards already follow your sisters-in-law, I could go shopping and do lunch,” Nyla probed.

“Not today, we have that thing.”

“What thing?” Rena peered at me.

“Business.”

“Business can wait, she’s newly married,” Rena pressed.

Pointing my fork at Nyla, I say, “Unlike you and Sante, Nyla has responsibilities she can’t get out of.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” Rena hissed.

“Vincenzo, that’s not fair,” Cora pitied.

“Maybe you should go suck his dick a little longer Nyla and he will relax more,” Rena jested.

“Oh, God,” Nyla tossed her head back.

“Did you tell her something?”

“What no!” Nyla fussed.

“You two are having sex, right?” Rena checked.

I argued, “None of your business Rena.”

Cora begged, “Rena, stay out of it, please.”

“Angelina wasn’t a good fit for him, and finally a girl we like comes along, and he’s blowing it up,” Rena hinted.

“Sex is not the issue.”

“Then what is it?”

My eyes grew large at Nyla's confrontation, in front of everyone. “Nothing, I will talk about it later.”

“He doesn’t want to sleep with me because of my past,” Nyla blurted out.

“That’s bullshit!” I shouted.

Nyla jumped out of her seat, pointed in my face. “Then tell me the truth. You kissed me last night and walked away.”

Running a hand down my face and exhaled seeing the hurt in her eyes. “Nyla, I was—”

“No, keep your excuses, just like Mark.” Nyla walked out of the kitchen while throwing her napkin on the table.

“What just happened?” Rena checked.

Her piqued interest got me thinking, as well. We had a decent night out together before the shooting. We came home, and I tried to respect her desires and not cross the line. Even though I should have hated her, over time, it became clearer that she needed protection, and the bitterness I kept holding onto was putting her in a defensive mood whenever we were together.

“Let me go talk to her.” Cora rose from her chair.

I confessed, “We kissed last night.”

Rena's hand ran down my face. “I can see you fighting your feelings.”

“Rena, it’s business.”
