“Convince yourself. It might be business, but you're in deep, little brother.”

“How does Sante put up with you?”

Picking up the cup of juice, she grinned while taking a sip. “Marrying your soulmate makes it worth the battle,” Rena replied.

Chapter 13

Nyla

Marriage is not what the fairytales make it out to be. Feeling rejected in front of the girls by Vincenzo fucked me up inside. Probably dumb for even wanting him to like me for real, but the simple fact of the matter is that I put myself in the situation, and I needed to get out as soon as possible.

“Hey.”

After peering up, Cora walked over and sat beside me in the game room. Early in the morning, before everybody got there, and while Vincenzo was still asleep, I explored more of the house and saw he had a man cave and a game room; I figured they were for his nieces and nephews when they came over. The chef told me about a theater and bowling alley near the basement, plus the pool outside. It was like a big playhouse that anyone could get lost in if they wanted to.

“Hey.”

“No real advice to give,” Cora said.

“Thanks.” I chuckled.

She smiled. “He’s a really sweet guy, give him a chance.”

“Business only, Cora.”

Cora shrieked. “None of us believe you two are only doing it for business.”

“After today’s confirmation, I do.”

Cora melted in the chair. “You really like him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Guilt.”

I looked at her, feeling like an open book. “My ex really fucked me up.”

“My ex and now current husband fucked me up,” Cora laughed.

“You married your ex?”

Cora’s cheeks bunched into a smile. “I did. Long story.”

“How did that happen? Like did he cheat on you?”

“Elio and I have a history like a roller-coaster ride. Would I trade him for someone new? Never, because what we’ve built is the truth. Love is never easy. If it were, then many people would experience it.”

“I thought I had true love with Mark.”

“Mark cared about you in his own way, probably, but in love? I doubt.”

“Why would you say something like that?”

“No guy would willingly put someone they love in a situation to get hurt.” Cora was saying the same things that Vincenzo had said to me that day.

Cora seemed genuine, and she’s closer to my age than the other girls. Her coming over with Rena and Sonya made me feel good and not excluded from the group of wives.

“If Vincenzo and I were to really give the relationship a chance, would that make me look selfish?”
