Raising her hand to my lap, she patted me on the back. “Judging yourself or caring what other people think or say is not any way to live.”

“You are right. My uncle is a bastard, and all he’s ever done is basically tell me I’m the cause of everything that’s bad in my life.”

“Tell your uncle he can suck a dick,” Cora jokes, covering her mouth.

“Rena has rubbed off on you,” I cackled.

“Seriously, if Vincenzo has forgiven you, wants to try a real relationship, and you want to see where it goes, that’s what matters.”

“Cora.” We turn to see Rena, stepping into the living room with the phone in her hand.

“Elio said he’s been trying to call you.” Rena held up the phone for her to take.

“Oh. Give me a second, Nyla.” Cora answered the call, leaving to have some privacy.

“Feel better yet?” Rena squatted down next to me.

“Yeah, are you and Vincenzo always so combative?”

“He’s really like a little brother to me,” Rena answered.

“Is he still in the kitchen?”

“No, in his office.”

“Give me a moment. Are you three still going shopping?”

“Probably, unless Elio wants Cora to come home,” Rena explained.

I huffed. “Marriage.”

After sauntering down the hall, I gently knocked on his office door and heard him shout that it was open. I slowly pushed forward, poking my head inside. He held the phone to his ear and gestured for me to wait a minute. After closing the door behind me, I stood near the wall, folding my arms and looking at everything—except him.

“Send the papers to my email, and I can sign them,” Vincenzo demanded, hanging up the call.

“I think we should talk.”

“I agree.”

“Last night, you said it was a mistake.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Vincenzo, if you're not going to be honest, we can end the entire plan.” I aimed for the door, but he leapt up and yanked me into his grasp.

“Stop assuming shit,” he growled in my ear, nuzzling his nose between my neck and shoulder.

I felt limp as a noodle in his arms. “Vincenzo,” I moaned.

“You jumped to what you thought I was going to say, by mistake.”

“Then explain it to me now.”

“Last night, putting you in that position to be shot at was a mistake on my part. Having you vulnerable in a situation even though I was next to you, that could have ended terribly.”

While he held me tight, he reached out and touched my cheek with his hand.

“Thank you.”
