“I wish, but no. I’m sorry I didn't tell you earlier. He forced me to go along with his plan.”
“For what?”
I sighed. I didn't know how to tell him about the stocks, and the seat on the board. He’ll probably think I went behind his back and planned it with my uncle.
“Can you promise to not kill him?”
“Nyla, I can’t make that promise.”
“He hasn't told me who my birth father is, and I’d like to meet him, and that side of my family.”
“I understand you need closure, but my family are on the line, and they come first.”
“Right, your family.”
I sat on the fence about whether I should spill the entire story or try to get the truth from my uncle on my own. I listened to Cassandra on the phone, talking about her latest date. It made me miss being single and meeting new people.
“I’m so glad he let you have a phone again, so we can FaceTime each other like old times.” Cassandra held up a blue dress, wanting my opinion on her first date.
I pushed the spoon in the ice cream tub, sulking in the house after we got back home from my uncle’s. Vincenzo told me to wait for him to get off the phone with his family, and I had no plans on spending any more time with him after today.
“Something happened.”
I dropped the tub on the table. “No, why do you ask?”
“You have that sour puss face,” Cassandra teased.
Reaching for the napkin, I wipe my hands. “Ugh, I hate you.”
Cassandra thrust a makeup bag at me. “All love over here.”
“Where is he taking you?”
“To a jazz club.”
“That sounds nice.”
Cassandra puffed her hair up. “Our official first date since he had to cancel last time.”
“Why did he cancel?”
“Work.”
“Lucky you.”
“What did hubby do now?” Cassandra joked.
“I can't talk about it right now.”
“Must have pissed you off. You are almost halfway finished with the tub of ice cream.”
Peering down at the strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla mixture, I started to feel sick from letting him get to me to the point I binged on ice cream.
“What time is he picking you up?”
“In an hour. Why?”
“I need a favor.”
