A month passed, and my uncle had ignored all my calls—even to the point of changing his number. After speaking with a lawyer, he explained the papers were fabrications, and that the trust fund was used years ago. Sitting in his office and hearing how my uncle spent my money without consulting me aggravated my soul. To him, I was just a bank; he could draw money and leave a negative balance without paying it back. The second I ran away with Mark, he never tried to find me to rectify the situation.

After throwing the phone on the table, I listened to the girls laugh and talk about the boys, nagging at them about the night that Vincenzo came and yanked me away.

I invited Cassandra for lunch. I wanted to apologize because Ralph hadn't spoken to her since. “Cass, will you ignore me all day?”

“I should, since I haven’t had sex in over a month,” Cassandra spat.

Rena had been cackling at our back-and-forth arguing from the moment Cassandra came into her house. During an early morning group chat, I added Cassandra, so she could see the havoc that went on with the Calabresi men’s wives.

“Cassandra, you like to hold a grudge, same as me. I like you.” Rena clinked her glass with Cassandra.

“Rena, please.”

“Thank you, my new bestie,” Cassandra teased me.

“How about I invite you on a trip with me and the girls?”

“So, you and your husband get along now?” Cora challenged.

Avoiding all of the stares, I gulped the rest of the mimosa and refilled my glass.

“She got laid,” Cassandra blurted out.

“No, I didn’t.”

All of them gave me a face of “you’re lying”.

“If I did?”

“Nothing to be ashamed about, we're all married,” Rena reminded me.

“I could have been if your husband had some got damn sense,” Cassandra blasted.

“He’s a work in progress,” I shrugged.

“Oh, she’s definitely getting laid.” In response, Rena held up her hand for a high-five.

My attention focused on my cell, vibrating on the table from back-to-back messages. After lifting it, I saw it was Vincenzo, checking to see how my day was going.

Vincenzo: Whatever Rena says is a lie.

Me: Leave her alone.

Vincenzo: She’s a menace.

Me: You love your sister-in-law.

Vincenzo: Sometimes. I’m in a business meeting, and I’ll be home late.

Me: Okay, I tried Cono again, no answer.

Vincenzo: Leave him to me.

Me: But he’s trying to take advantage of the deal.

Vincenzo: I will handle him and Gianney.

“See. She’s sitting there ignoring us for her man,” Cassandra tittered, throwing a grape in her mouth.
