He shook his head. “Too late for that. Five million reasons why I can’t pull out.”

“Are you sure we can pull off a robbery?”

He sat on the couch and tugged me onto his lap. “You worry too much.”

“No more gambling, Mark.”

He wrapped his arms around me. “I promised you I wouldn’t.”

“That’s what you said last time.” I poked my lip out.

He groaned and slid me off his lap, heading to the bedroom.

I stood to follow him. “Where are you going?”

He glanced at me over his shoulder. “To shower and head out for work.”

“Mark, we both know going out puts you in danger.”

Running the water in the sink, he winced as he wiped the blood off his cheek. “I got everything under control. Besides, your uncle made me promise to take care of his little princess.”

Mark didn’t come home that night. I decided to let him handle his part while I focused on what I could do to get us out of this mess.

I parked in the employee section of the Casino and checked in, going up to the third floor to wait for my trainer.

“Morning.”

I lifted my head to see a woman with long blond hair and a kid beside her smiling at me. I waved at him. “Hi.”

“Haven’t seen you around here before? Are you new?”

Her inquiry caught me off-guard. Maybe she worked here or knew someone who did. It was unusual to see a child at a casino.

“My first day. Is it obvious?” I joked.

She smiled, lifted the boy onto the reception desk, and held her hand out to me. “I’m Sonya. I’m married to Renato Calabresi.”

I shook her hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Nyla.” I directed my attention towards the boy. “Who’s the little guy?”

Sonya looked at her son. “RJ, say hi, buddy.”

He waved at me shyly, and I gave him a cheerful smile.

“Renato, as in Vincenzo’s brother?”

Sonya nodded. “We’re meeting him here for lunch.”

I started to reply when the elevator dinged, and loud voices could be heard down the hall.

“My business, my decision,” Vincenzo snapped, coming into view. The stress lines on his forehead seemed to be more defined as we talked.

“Forget who the big brother is, I guess,” the man with him replied. He reminded me of a young Paul Newman with his tall stature and blond hair trimmed at the sides.

“Daddy!” RJ raised his hands.

“Sonya, I told you to wait for me in my office.” he barked, grabbing his son from the desk.

I turned to look at Vincenzo. His scowl told me I had already fucked up, and I had no clue how.
