Sonya raised an eyebrow. “Renato, we have company.”

Everybody stared at me. My cheeks hurt as I forced a smile and waved, wondering if it would be rude to bolt.

“She’s new.” Sonya’s husband pointed at me.

“She won’t be here long.”

Vincenzo’s comment pissed me off. Usually, I would go back at him, but I bit my tongue, reminding myself of Mark's plan.

I offered a handshake to Renato. He ignored it until Sonya punched his arm, and he reluctantly shook my hand. Friendly guy, like his brother.

“Have a good first day,” Sonya said cheerfully. She grabbed Renato’s hand, and they walked away with RJ. Hearing them bickering back and forth was comical.

“Did you come here to work or hang out with my family?” Vincenzo demanded.

I took a deep breath and walked into his office. “Here to work, Sir.”

“Go to the employee level and partner with my assistant. She's waiting for you.”

I turned to leave. “Thank you.”

“And Nyla.”

“Yes, sir?”

“If your intentions are not genuine, I will find out.”

I let his words seep in. His warning reminded me of my argument with my uncle before I ran away to be with Mark.

Shaking off the memory, I left his office, bypassing his guards. After heading to the employee level, I hopped on the elevator with a few others, staying in the back and listening to their conversation.

I’d noticed that all the women who worked there were young, beautiful, and stacked in all the right places. Vincenzo had a type, and I was not it. I wasn’t sure why that made me feel sad—not that it mattered, because Mark was the love of my life, and he loved all of me.

Trailing the girls wearing uniforms, I found Vincenzo’s assistant talking to Sonya and a red-haired woman.

“Hey, Angelina.”

Angelina glanced over her shoulder and plastered on a fake grin. “Sonya, Rena, meet… I’m sorry. What’s your name again?” She snapped her fingers at me.

“Nyla. We met yesterday.”

“Right, Nyla.” She nodded. “You probably won’t last a day. Vincenzo hired way more people than he needed to do.”

“Weren’t you just rehired after getting fired not long ago?” Rena, the redheaded, asked.

Angelina pressed her lips, looking like she wanted to claw her eyes out.

“Nice to see you again, Nyla. I apologize for my husband.” Sonya smiled.

I waved it off. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

Rena extended her hand in greeting. “Hi, Rena Calabresi, married to the second eldest brother, Sante.”

“Hi, Rena. I’m Nyla. I was just hired yesterday.”

“We're not paying you to sit around and suck up to the family,” Angelina spat, stomping off to the elevator.

I forced myself to keep my composure. We’d only had a brief interaction yesterday, but Angelina had been pleasant and professional.
