“Can’t help it until we get him.”

Nyla came into the house with Sonya drinking and laughing together.

“Hey baby.” She roped her arm around my neck, pushing her lips on my chin.

“We need to talk,” Renato said.

Nyla scanned the harsh faces of all my family.

“What’s wrong?” Nyla waited, and Sonya stood next to her.

“Sonya, this is private,” Renato remarked.

Sonya sassed, “Nyla wants me here.”

“No, it’s fine,” Nyla replied.

Extending a hand to pull her into my lap, I pressed a kiss on her shoulder. “She’ll be fine.”

“Cono was kidnapped,” Savio said, and Nyla stiffened in my arms.

Nyla's legs buckled. “Kidnapped for what?”

“We went to see him to talk,” I said.

Nyla looked down at me. “Talk.”

“Nyla, let us not play the innocent and naive route, you know what your uncle is trying to do.” Renato blew smoke from his lungs.

“Renato,” I demanded.

Nyla squinted her eyes. “I know he’s out to try and get your family’s company, but I wouldn't allow it to happen.”

Renato guzzled down his glass of Gnarly Head 1924. “How can we trust you?”

I defended, “I trust her.”

“Vincenzo knows I would do anything to get Cono to back off,” Nyla pleaded.

“He’s no longer going to have to worry about backing off; we’re killing him,” Renato announced, walking out of the room.

Nyla dropped her glass, jumped out of my lap, and ran from the house.

“Nyla!” I yelled, following to catch up, but Sonya stepped in front of me. “Let me try,” she said.

“I will give you a minute, then I’m coming after her.”

Sonya nodded, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

She won’t leave me.

The ride home was quiet. Nyla ignored everything I said. Even when I tried to touch her hand, she pushed me away. After walking into the house, she went straight upstairs, not letting me explain the real reason behind Cono’s situation. After jogging upstairs, I entered the bedroom before she could shut the door, then I slammed it behind us.

“Are we ignoring each other for the entire night, or are you willing to hear me out?”

“Nothing to explain.”

I watched her remove her shoes and earrings.
