“Does Mitch know you were a cheerleader?”

“I don’t think so.” I look at him. “Don’t tell him.”

He shrugs. “Why would I?”

“Just to mess with me.”

“I’m guessing he wouldn’t have a problem with it.”

I shake my head. “You’re such a guy sometimes.”

“So, it seems you want to go to your reunion.”

“I’m thinking about it. But it’ll be weird going alone. I haven’t really kept in touch with any of my friends. Everyone is married and has kids. They’ll totally judge me for being single at twenty-eight.”

“Hmm. I say, who cares what they think?”

“Maybe you could come with me. You knew most of the people from my class. You dated half of the girls. Showing up with the quarterback Link would be great fun. I know a few ex-cheerleaders who’d be jealous.”

“I did not date half. Maybe a third.” He laughs. “And no. I didn’t go to mine. Why would I go to yours?”

I shrug. “Just a thought.”

He thinks for a moment, then turns to face me. “I’ll tell you what. If you can get your ‘victim of his circumstances’ client to actually show up for his court date. I’ll go to the reunion with you.”

I laugh. “Really? I don’t believe you.”

He holds out his hand. “You have my word.”

I shake with him. “Okay, officer, you’re on.”

I didn’t see Link the rest of the week, and on Saturday, I am getting nervous about going to the concert with Mitch. I almost called him several times and canceled. But I told him why I was going. I was totally upfront with him.

When he texts me and tells me he’s almost here, I go out front to wait for him. Letting him come to the door makes it feel too much like a date. He pulls up in his ostentatious little sports car. Mitch, unlike me, is making some pretty good money.

I wave and cross the yard to him, then get in the car when he reaches across the seat and opens the door for me.

He smiles at me. “This is going to be epic.”

“Yeah. Can’t wait. The last time I saw them was in high school.”

He turns to look at me. “About twelve years ago? Same venue?”

“Yes.”

“I was there.”

“Wow. Cool.” And a little weird. I didn’t even know Mitch grew up here.

“You must’ve been pretty young.”

“A sophomore. I went with my brother and his friend. Actually, you know him. Link Brandt.”

“The cop? You went to school with that guy?”

“Yeah.”

“Huh. I thought you just knew him from work.”
