“If you go through with it, don’t expect me to represent you in court.”

“That’s cold. But fair.” He cocks his head. “Do you want to get some coffee?”

“I don’t drink coffee this late at night. But I’ll take a Coke.”

He takes my arm. “You know Coke has caffeine in it, too.”

“It’s not the same.”

“Whatever.” He looks around the parking lot. “Now, if I could just remember where I parked.”

“We could wait until everyone leaves.”

“We might have to.”

IglanceatTed,who is studying something on his laptop. It seems he’s determined to be the best cop ever born, but he’s going about it the wrong way. I’ve given up on trying to tell him there’s a lot more to it than memorizing procedural manuals. But he doesn’t get it, and I’ll be glad when Rosie’s back to replace him. I’ve had better conversations with her than I’ve had in the week Ted’s been riding shotgun.

I’m also concerned that with Ted’s head everywhere but on the job, sooner or later he’s going to get one or both of us into a bad position. He’ll have no idea what to do when faced with a real-life situation. Fortunately, we haven’t had to deal with much yet.

I nudge him. “Hey.”

He scowls at me.

“Pay attention to where we’re at and where we’re going.”

“I am.”

“No. You’re not. Keep your eyes on me and tell me what street we’re on.”

“Um…Eleventh. You turned on Eleventh.”

“Ten minutes ago. Put the laptop down and pay attention to our surroundings. It might save your life someday.”

He sets the laptop on the floor next to his seat. “We haven’t had a call in a while.”

“Nope. It’s been quiet.” I tap my finger on the wheel while we sit at a red light.

“Don’t you get bored?”

“Being bored means no one’s out there causing trouble. Bored is okay. Because it doesn’t last. Just enjoy it while you can.”

“Have you ever had to discharge your weapon?”

I sigh. “Not as a cop.”

“Were you in the military?”

“Yeah. And I’m not going to talk about it.” The light changes and I pull through the intersection.

“Fine.” He stares out the window for a few minutes, then looks at me again. “Can we stop for some lunch?”

I check my watch. It’s about that time. “Yeah. We’ll get a call for sure if we stop to eat.” He laughs but I know it’s true—it happens every time.

I drive to one of my favorite spots and just as we sit down with our food, the call comes in. We wolf down a few bites, then toss the rest before heading back to the car.
