Link laughs. “We’re both horrible people. You more than me, of course.”

I glance past him at Jessica and Mitch. “Are we? Seems we’re the ones being ignored.”

“I’d rather watch with you than her, any day.”

“Me too. Or with Mitch. You know what I mean.”

The show starts again and the second half is so much better. Maybe it’s the company. Having someone to share it with makes it much more enjoyable. We both sing along and I’m reminded of how off-key Link sings. But he does it with such gusto that I can’t help but be impressed.

I yell over the music into his ear. “You’re a terrible singer.”

He grins. “Thank you. At least I know the words.”

I nudge him. But he’s right—he knows them all. I remember about half of them.

When the concert is over, we make our way outside and Mitch pulls me aside.

“So, since this wasn’t a date or anything. Do you think your buddy could take you home? It’s just that Jessica mentioned this sushi place nearby and well…” He shrugs.

I nod.Like this is a surprise?“That’s fine, Mitch. Go have some fun with Officer Jessica.”

He grins. “I’ll see you at the office.”

“Bye, Mitch.” This just proves that my instincts about him were right all along.

Link comes over to me and I can tell Jessica had the same conversation with him. “Seems we’ve been officially dumped.”

“You’ll take me home, right?”

He takes a step back. “No way. I’ve got plans. Big plans.” He says sarcastically.

“Going home to Rosie?”

“Yeah.”

“How is she, by the way?”

“Coming along. I don’t think she’ll be out the whole month. I hope not anyway. I got my new temporary partner yesterday.” He blows out a breath.

“How’d that go?”

“His name is Ted. And he’s a rookie.”

“So, you should have the final word, then.”

“You’d think. But he spent all day today pointing out every time I didn’t follow protocol to the letter.”

“Aren’t you supposed to follow protocol?”

He sticks his hands in his pockets. “Yes. But sometimes the situation may call for tweaking protocol.”

“I see.” I pat his arm. “I’m sure he’ll lighten up after a while. He’s probably just nervous. Working with a seasoned professional like yourself.”

“He talks nonstop. Today I wanted to muzzle him and throw him in the backseat.”

I laugh. “That’s probably against protocol.”

“But it’d be pretty satisfying.”
