“No. The cheerleader here is though.”

They all laugh and one of them steps forward. “That’d be me, sir.”

I put a hand on his shoulder. “A friendly wager?”

“Sure.” He glances at Allyssa. “What’d you have in mind?”

“Five bucks.”

“Heck, yeah. But why not make it twenty?”

I wink at Allyssa. “You’re on.”

Allyssa proceeds to beat him and two more of the rookie cops before we walk away with sixty dollars. I stick it in my pocket. “Easiest sixty bucks I ever made.”

“Excuse me? I believe I was the one playing the game.”

“True. But the money’s in my pocket.”

She nudges me. “Only because I don’t have any pockets. I’ll give you a ten percent management fee.”

“Twenty.”

She stops walking and looks at me. “Fifteen.”

I grin and give her a kiss. “Fifteen it is.”

“You drive a hard bargain, Sargeant Brandt.”

We get two Cokes from the bar and find a table. It’s still loud and crazy and I look at Allyssa. “Do you want to—“

“Yes.”

I grin. “You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

She smiles. “Yes I do. Because I know you, Lincoln. Let’s get out of here.”

We make our way through the crowd, which is slow going because we have to talk to half of them before we get to the door. Once we’re outside, I take a breath.

“Phew. That took a while.”

“Everybody loves you, Link.”

“I think they all just wanted to hug the cheerleader.”

We head down the street for the truck and when we get there, I stop Allyssa from getting in.

“Hold up. Let’s sit for a minute.”

There’s a bench on the sidewalk and we sit down. I take her hand. “A year ago, I wasn’t sure if you’d still want me around by this Halloween.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

I shrug. “I thought maybe you’d get tired of the real Link once you really got to know me.”

“I grew up with you. I know you.”

“I suppose.”
