He was doing this for her.

For their child.

For Cardosia.

He couldn’t lose sight of that. He’d tried to find a different solution, had fought the path he’d been urged to take for so long, but enough was enough. The critical mass had been reached. His uncle could no longer be allowed free rein.

‘Sí.I have something to take care of.’ He approached the bed and leaned over, unable to help himself, to taste soft lips still swollen from his kisses. She blushed, still shy despite everything they’d done to each other in the last few days. Minutes later, he groaned and leaned his forehead against hers.

‘I have to go,dulce. But you have two choices. I can send the chopper back to bring you home later or you can stay here. I’ll be back tomorrow, maybe the day after.’

Her beautiful, astute eyes searched his. He knew she read in his eyes the resolution that pounded in his veins. After a handful of seconds, she nodded tentatively.

‘I’ll decide later. I have my laptop with me. I’ll get some work done,’ she replied.

Pride warred with this new extreme possessiveness he couldn’t stem. He would be the last person to stand in the way of her work, but he didn’t want her consumed with anything else but him. As irrational as that was.

‘As long as you promise to take care of yourself?’

A slow smile spread across her face, the siren she was becoming rousing to render him even weaker.‘Sí, mi esposo,’she responded with sultry seductiveness.

Dios mio.He shuddered to think how powerful she would be a year...ten years from now, when the shadows of desolation faded completely, and her confidence grew in spades.

Knowing he would be there to experience it set his veins alight. Just as her face, her body, her beautiful mind did.

With another, rougher groan, he tore himself away, stood looking down at her for an age before striding for the door. Teeth gritted, he grasped the handle, just as her voice reached him again.

‘Seve?’

‘Sí—’He turned and froze.

She’d thrown off the sheet. One arm was flung above her head and her back arched ever so slightly, her blooming body on full seductive display. ‘I’ll miss you.’

‘Dulce cielo.’As he pivoted and reversed direction, he knew he was going to be late.

Very late.

It was impossible to be this happy. Illogical, even. And yet here she was.

Delirious.

She’d taken her time to leave their bed after Seve’s departure. She missed him even as he reluctantly dressed after ravishing her. Lingering in bed, breathing in his scent had made her heart swell even bigger. While she had reminders of him everywhere in the cabin, their bedroom was where she felt closest to him. So she’d stayed, lazily enjoying the breakfast tray delivered by the butler soon after Seve’s chopper had taken off.

That was the other reason she’d stayed in bed. As she’d known he would, Seve had instructed the staff to descend on the cabin, his unapologetic protectiveness allowing no argument.

Well, she was just over eight months pregnant after all. So she’d gone from having just her husband for company to having a staff of six, including a doctor and two bodyguards, secreted in and around the cabin, keeping a discreet eye on her.

She sighed.

She wasn’t really complaining. Seve was a busy man. A possessive one too, she was discovering. Why that sent a thrill through her, she wasn’t going to question because she welcomed it. It fed a previously dried-up well where there should’ve been love and fulfilment but which instead was fractured with loneliness and desolation.

Which was why she was perfectly happy to dwell in her happy bubble all day and the next, taking a short walk to the wide, clear stream that ran a few hundred feet from the cabin. She even managed to ignore the guards who remained close but out of sight as she sat on a high rock next to the stream and raised her face to the warming sun.

Sadly, she couldn’t outrun the chafing disquiet. And there by the stream, faint unease grew into a distinct pang.

She still hadn’t told Seve she loved him. Because something was holding her back. Self-preservation because he hadn’t expressed his own emotions?

Was she so shallow that she needed him to declare his feelings first?
