I put down the line and smoothed my hair, then made some adjustments to my lipstick.

He knocked again. "Come in," I beckoned.

The door opened slowly, and he stepped inside. "Pardon me, is this Dr. Tabitha Hill's office?"

My mouth dropped in shock…it was the stranger from last night.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked as I reached for the phone.

"I did mention that we would meet again soon," he said with a dry chuckle. "Is it that surprising to see me here?"

I didn't answer and quickly called Alex. There was definitely a mistake.

"Yes, ma'am?" the older man answered.

"What's the name of the doctor you just sent into my office?" I asked.

"Oh, his name is Dr. Jericho, ma'am. Dr. Bruce Jericho," he affirmed.

I turned to look at Bruce; he gave me a small finger wave, accompanied by a grin.

"Is there any problem?" Alex asked.

"From now on, let me look at the profile of anyone who applies," I suggested.

"Did I do something wrong?" the man asked.

"No, you didn't," I answered, realizing that my overreaction was making the older man worried.

"I'm sorry about that, Alex, but you did nothing wrong, I assure you."

"Oh, okay then," he said. I ended the call and let out a deep breath.

"Am I in trouble?" Bruce asked. The cocky smile was gone; only worry was written on his face.

"Did you know who I was?" I asked.

"I don't know how to answer that question," he replied. "Everyone in Richmond knows you."

He was right, the question wasn't the right one.

I rephrased it. "What I meant was, did you do all that stuff to me, thinking it would increase your chance of getting this job?"

"At least let me get seated," he said, ignoring the urgency of my question. "It's proper courtesy, you know?"

You're still doing it again. He was proudly standing his ground against me.

"Sit," I demanded.

"Tone too. We've talked about this, haven't we?" he asked as he took a seat.

I knew what he was referring to when he asked the question, but I ignored it.

"I'll repeat myself," I muttered. "Is that why you did that?"

"If my answer is yes?"

"Then I'll have to end your interview early and send you packing," I revealed. But deep down, I didn't want to do that.
