I squeezed Abaddon’s hand, and he squeezed mine in return. That was when I heard the voice. Faint, and low, but far too close for comfort, andfartoo familiar. It chilled me more than even the maze could, cutting through the very core of my being and my soul.

“Why did you let him take me away?” asked Gadriel, her voice weak, and low.

My heart stopped.

Icy water moved through my veins. I froze in place, one hand firmly gripping Abaddon’s, the other brought up to my chest.

“Gadriel?” I asked.

“That is not Gadriel,” said Abaddon. “Do not speak to it.”

“Sara… help me. Talk to me. Please. I can’t find you.”

“I—”

—Abaddon’s grip tightened around my hand.

“Please, say something…” pleaded Gadriel. “It’s so cold in here, and I can’t see. I’m lost.”

My heart felt like it was being crushed by a vice. “What if it is her?” I asked Abaddon, my voice barely a whisper.

“It is not,” he said, “I would not lie to you about this.”

“No, don’t listen to him,” said Gadriel. “It’s me. I climbed out of the Pit.”

“You can’t be her. No one ever gets out of the Pit.”

“Sarakiel,please.” Abaddon pleaded.

“I did,” Gadriel continued, “I’ve been here ever since, waiting, wandering through these dark halls. Looking for you. I just want to go home, Sara. With you. Please, take me home with you.”

Abaddon tugged my hand, urging me forward and past the voice. I did, following his lead.

“I… if it’s not her, what is it?” I asked, looking behind to try get a glimpse of her.

“It is this place. You hear her, but I hear someone else. Someone who willnot stop talking.”

“Who are you hearing?”

“I hear the voice of Raziel.”

Raziel. I remembered him. I had crossed paths with him a few times, back at Abaddon’s Bastion. I’d always felt like he’d made it a point to avoid me, as if he disapproved of my presence. Unlike the other soldiers of the Ebon Legion, his armors filigree was gold instead of silver, denoting his position as Abaddon’s lieutenant, and one of his most trusted allies.

He probably thought I was a distraction to Abaddon and nothing more.

I couldn’t blame him for being protective.

“Are both voices coming from the same place?” I asked.

“Most likely,” he said, “I do not know exactly how it works, but it is trying to confuse us. We must not seek it out, or listen to it, or we will get lost.”

“He’s lying to you,” said Gadriel. “He can hear me. I promise. Please. Find me! Save me!”

I knew I shouldn’t answer her, but her voice… her pleading…I couldn’t bear it.

“Gadriel is gone,” I said to the darkness.

“But she isn’t,” said Gadriel. “I’m right here, Sara. I’m right here. All you have to do is reach out your hand, and you’ll touch mine.”
