“I defend those who are unjustly accused.” I replied absently, looking at my phone.

“Your brother is scum. The only reason you aren’t considered scum along with him is because you can hide behind your fancy degree.” Minosa snapped.

“Sounds like you are jealous.” My brother said as he was escorted toward us.

I sighed as Tommy grinned at Minosa, knowing this was going to end with him goading him into a fight and I would have to bail him out yet again.

“Shut up, Tommy. Let’s go.” I said as I gripped my brother’s arm tightly.

He saluted Minosa on his way out, laughing at the glare he got in return.

“Why do you insist on making it harder for me to defend you? What did you do this time?” I said, shoving Tommy into the passenger seat of my car.

I got in the other side as Tommy moved his seat to lay back.

“Nothing. I was just standing there minding my own business with the boys when another guy got into a fight next to us. We tried to separate them and then more guys got involved. We didn’t throw any punches; we did the right thing. You told me to keep myself clean and I did. Officer Wanker in there arrested me because its me.” He said, putting his arms above his head with a sigh.

“Tommy. You have to stop getting into these situations. I can't keep bailing you out. We already have a big enough issue with them trying to build a case against you. When are you going to get out?” I asked softly and he looked at me solemnly.

“You know as well as I do that I can't get out. Once you’re in, you’re in. End of story. But the boys don’t want it to be the way it is. The Hydra are making it hard. We were keeping to ourselves until they split and you know it.” He said, the same argument we always had.

“Dad started the gang all those years ago to be a safe place for the kids who had nowhere else to go. He wanted it to mean something. I want it to mean something.” He added and I winced.

I hated it when he used this argument against me.

“I know, Tom, but the way things are going, you are going to end up in a ditch somewhere or locked away for life and our mother will lose what little sanity she has left.” I said, immediately regretting it.

The relationship he had with our mother was different to mine.

“Low blow, Ham. You can’t use our mother against me like that.” He said and I glanced at him.

“Sorry. It’s been a tough few days.” I muttered and he nodded.

“I get that. So, who is she?” He said and I raised my eyebrow at him.

“What?” I said as I dodged the traffic, heading toward Tommy’s place.

“You only ever get this testy when a woman is involved. I could set you on fire and piss on the car and you wouldn’t use mother against me or be so disheveled. The last time you were like this was over Mia. So, who is she?” He pushed and I winced.

“No one. Just my neighbor being a pain in my ass.” I muttered and he laughed.

“Oh? How so? Is she a bombshell? Sex on legs?” He said and I huffed a laugh as I pictured my sexy neighbor.

“Yeah. She is also vengeful and prickly as hell.” I said and he sat up, leaning over the console wide a grin.

“What did she do?” He said and I couldn’t help but laugh at him, he looked like a school kid waiting on the gossip.

“She slashed my bike’s tires.” I said between my teeth, and he whistled low.

“What did you do?” He asked and I looked at him, seeing the amusement and annoyance.

“I ripped out all of her rose bushes.” I replied and Tommy cackled.

“Wow. I can’t wait to see where this goes. She sounds perfect for you and your temper.” He said, laying back on the seat.

“I don’t have a temper.” I argued and he glanced at me.

“Right. Hamish Proffitt has no temper at all. He wasn’t the one responsible for our parents always having to show up at school because he was in the principal’s office after beating up yet another kid who said you were a pretty boy.” He deadpanned and I grimaced.
