This may be a weird dynamic, but we could make it work.

I made a note to check on the computers later, not just because I needed to see the security system but if I needed to be available to the Warriors, I had to have secure access.

And I would have to tell them about it too. I had asked Katerina for trust; it was time I told her about my secret.

Soon.

Twenty eight

Hamish

“Hamish. Come and sit with Claudia.” My mother called in her fake voice, and I plastered a polite smile on my face as I looked at the two women.

There was a predatory look in Claudia’s eyes as she watched me. I never did like the woman, but she had never done anything to outright anger me.

It was just something in her demeanor, a sense of entitlement that most of the people in the elite class held.

“Hamish. Please sit. I do look forward to discussing our arrangement.” Claudia said in her singsong voice.

I glanced at my mother who grinned.

“Yes. The idea of the Davenports and the Proffitt’s coming together is a marvelous one.” My mother continued.

I’d rather rip my heart out of my chest than let this woman have a claim to it, even in name.

“Indeed. I hear Tommy is getting himself straightened up.” Claudia said with a touch of venom that had me stiffening.

I heard the underlying threat in those words, the bitch.

She was using her father’s status as leverage against Tommy.

“Hamish! Just the man I wanted to see.” The man in question said as he made his way toward me.

“Come, come. I have a business partner I would like you to meet. Leave the women to their chatter.” He said with a wave of the hand.

I hated him as much as Claudia, but right now, I was grateful for the distraction from having to listen to her voice.

“Lead the way,” I said with a nod at my mother who beamed at me, glad I was connecting with the people she wanted to marry me off to.

“This man is in an elite class. Very discreet. He has an issue with some paperwork, and I thought you could look over them for him.” He said as we walked toward his office.

“Of course. Anything to help out a friend, Albert.” I said as we weaved in and out of other guests.

I hated these events. Brunch wasn’t just brunch. It was a collection of people with too much time and money who came together to judge each other and try to form connections that would make them richer.

I don’t know how my father did it for all those years.

Albert opened the heavy wooden door and a man sat at the desk, looking up with interest. It was a younger man, probably close to my age. My guess was mid to late thirties.

His hair was cropped short to his head and his suit was perfectly pressed but it was the calculating look in his eyes that had me on edge.

This man wasn’t a good man.

An older gentleman sat in a leather chair to the side, a glass of whiskey in his hand as he watched us walk in.

“Ah. Phillip. This is the man I mentioned to you. His name is Hamish Proffitt.” Albert said as Phillip stood taller, holding his hand out for me to shake.

“A pleasure to meet you. I hear you and Albert are soon to be family.” He said with a sly smile and I glanced at Albert, wondering why that had been a topic of discussion.
