He was dressed in a plain white shirt and a pair of dark blue business pants, his shirt unbuttoned and rolled at the sleeves.

I noticed he was also not wearing any shoes either.

“Did I interrupt something?” I asked as he closed the door behind me.

“No. I just like to be comfortable when I am going through my paperwork.” He said before he directed me to the same room, we sat in a few nights ago.

“Vodka?” He asked, his accent thick.

“I’d prefer whiskey if you have it,” I said and he nodded, reaching for a decanter.

“So why were you looking into me?” I asked and he smiled.

“The same reason you were looking into me.” He replied and I snorted.

“So, we don’t trust each other. I guess it is good to know we are on the same page.” I said and he hummed.

“And yet, you sit across from me. Why are you here really, Hamish?” He asked and I sighed.

“I don’t know,” I said and he laughed.

“Ah. So, it is Katerina. You like her. Maybe even falling in love with her.” He said and I bristled at the idea, but something inside me rang true.

“It would seem she is destined to pull many of us into her orbit. If you are here to question my loyalty, let me assure you that everything I have done and will do is for her even if it doesn’t seem like it on the surface.” He said and I studied this man.

His hair was cut close to his head neatly, his blue eyes an almost ethereal glow and a stark contrast to the rest of him.

This man was pure muscle, the hint of tattoos showing beneath his rolled-up business shirt, and I didn’t miss the holster that was still loosely over his shoulder, proving that he was every inch a man of the Bratva.

“I don’t know why, but I believe you. I always did. I can see it in your eyes and my gut tells me that you are a man of your word.” I said and he saluted me with his drink.

“So what are you going to do about your impending engagement?” He asked with a grin, and I groaned.

“Fucking engagement. My mother is over the moon about her little arrangement. I don’t know how to get out of this without it blowing back on my brother.” I muttered, taking a long sip of the whiskey.

“Ah. The things we do for family. I can help you if you want. Albert Davenport is a man with many secrets, and I am sure we can find one that you can use to your advantage.” I studied Alexsei, wondering what his angle was.

He was aware of the engagement situation and who Albert was, I wondered if he knew about the Fellowship.

“Have you heard of the Fellowship?” I asked and he sighed.

“In passing. They are a bunch of rich old men who believe in control and power. They made a deal with Ivan many years ago though I don’t know what it was exactly. Why?” He asked and I ran my hand through my hair.

“I met a man today who is a part of them. Albert is a member too and they want me to join.” I said with a sigh.

“I don’t like it, but I am stuck. If I don’t go along with their plans, they have enough against Tommy to put him away.” I said and Alexsei sat forward, leaning on his knees.

“These men are small. They think they can control with threats, but you forget, Hamish. You are now dealing with the Bratva. Do you think they are not at least a little bit worried? And if you think they haven’t connected you with Katerina, you are naïve. All you have to do is find a pressure point and push. They will back off. If your father said no, you can too.” He said and I realized just how much information he had on me.

“Since you seem to know all about me, why don’t you tell me what your angle is here?” I asked.

“I am playing many sides but the ultimate thing I am trying to uncover is who the White Fox is. I have a meeting scheduled with Egor tomorrow to figure out what his connection is to Victor and the mysterious guest, but the end game always has been White Fox. I haven’t heard from my contact in Moscow either.” He frowned, his jaw ticking and the only indication of his annoyance.

“Well. Why don’t you tell me what you have so far, and we can help each other.” I said and he smiled.

This may be the beginning of an unusual alliance, but something told me that Alexsei and I were going to become good friends.
