When his eyes divert back to the untangled rope, I redivert to the tattoos covering his arms and chest. A dragon, a bear, antlers of some kind, symbols I don’t recognize, and some others I can’t clearly see in this light. Truthfully, he could be covered in ponies and the man would somehow make it look hot.

He reaches behind me, and while I think he’s going for something else in the closet, he bends down and grips my wrists, looping the rope around twice.

I laugh. “Ha. Ha. You can stop now. I get it.”

Except he doesn’t stop. He continues to wrap me up, twisting and turning the rough rope against my skin.

What the fuck?“What are you doing?” I thrash against him and scream, but he doesn’t care, and his size is overpowering. “This isn’t funny!”

“I’m not trying to be funny, princess. You don’t like to listen. You could’ve gotten us both killed.” He pulls the end of the rope and tightens it around a rack in the closet so I can’t move. “I’m going to get rid of the bodies, load the sled, and we’regoing to get out of here. Who knows how many of those assholes there are?”

Bodies. He has to get rid ofbodies. My internal shaking manifests outwardly.

Here is where the guilt sinks in. The realization that I’ve turned this family’s simple bear hunt into a manhunt. This isn’t fair. He didn’t ask for this. No wonder he’s tying me up.

“Okay, okay. I get it, but what about your dad? I can leave on my own. This is all my fault.”

He busies himself with his gloves and a hat from the closet. “Dad could win a shootout in his sleep. I’m not leaving you to fend for yourself.”

“A few hours ago, you were giving me a radio and calling it a day.”

“That was before,” he sighs. “It doesn’t matter. You can’t do this alone. End of story. Are you going to be quiet, or do I need duct tape too?”

Again, that shouldn’t turn me on, but it does. It probably helps that I know he’s not serious, and that these ropes would come off if I begged him long enough. At least I think that’s the case. Maybe that’s the hot part. I’m not completely sure what he’d do.

“I’ll be back in five minutes. Don’t make any noise. None at all. Do you understand?” His tone is low and serious.

Deep down, I know I’m a tough, gun wielding badass, but right now, I nod in agreement, and for once in my life, I listen.

Chapter Six

Niko

Pine trees covered in snow whip by as I follow a trail through the woods toward a cabin I should’ve made my way out to yesterday. The temps are frigid but weaving through the trees like this keeps the wind at bay and the ride more manageable.

Lainey is tucked in front of me, bundled in an extra snow coat that one of the guys left behind. It’s massively oversized on her, but she’s cocooned herself inside and I think she’s fallen asleep.

The woman needs the rest after all the damn loud-mouthin’ she’s doing. The danger she put us in back there is both irresponsible and wildly attractive. I can’t figure out why. On one hand, she could’ve gotten us killed, and that needs to stop. On the other, watching her so brazenly step out into the snow, carrying her gun, and nothing on her little, bare feet, was well… arousing. That said, hot or not, I need to trust that she’s going to listen before I untie her.

I did two loops around the cabin before we left. I’ve been a tracker my whole life. I’d notice a trail any man left behind. Humans are the easiest to track.

When I’m sure we’re safe to stop, I pull the sled against the back side of the cabin, and carry Lainey inside.

Where the place we’d been staying was run down, this place is barely standing. There’s a fireplace with wood stackednearby, a wooden platform bed, a countertop, and a sink that looks to be run on portable water. That’s not to mention there are drafts everywhere. I knew it was an old hunting cabin, but from a distance, it didn’t look this bad. Inside, it’s much, much worse. I’ll need to do some work in the morning to make sure we’re safe to stay here.

Lainey stirs when I settle her onto the bed and tighten the rope to the wood frame. I wish I didn’t have to, but I’m not taking any more chances.

While she rests, I start the fire, bury the snowmobile with branches, and cover any tracks that haven’t been swept away by the wind. We couldn’t get any further out if we tried. There are mountains along every edge of this area and rugged terrain spanning each side. There’s only one way in, and I’ve covered it.

When I finally get inside, the cabin is warm, and Lainey is sitting straight up with her blonde hair a mess and her sweet lips parted.

Like a sick fucking man, my cock aches.

She swallows hard and looks toward me. “I’m thirsty.”

I pull two water bottles from the bag and help her drink them.

“You’ve been gone a while,” she whispers, wiping her chin against her shoulder. “I figured you left me here.”
