“Sorry. It gets jammed. You have to release it with the wrench in the glove box. Not pretty, but it works.”

It’s just a door. It’s just a seat belt. He’s just a man. My fantasy didn’t include broken seatbelts and a grumpy demeanor, but my clit didn’t get the memo. She’s throbbing like he’s tied me up and whispered dirty, filthy things in my ear.

Apparently, that’s how desperate I am. A man can begrudgingly take me for a ride, give the bare minimum, and I’m dripping wet.

Dear Lord, please send help.

Chapter Two

Niko

“I’ll take you to a cabin in the woods. You’ll be fine there.”

The woman beside me scoffs. “That wasn’t the deal. You have to help me. I wouldn’t know what to do in the woods by myself.”

“Clearly,” I groan with one hand on the wheel, the other on the windowsill. “Look, I appreciate your need for help, but I can’t give it to you. I have a sick father, we’re here to hunt, and everyone in town hates us. If I go harboring a little rich girl, it’s not going to look good on my family. So… I’ll take you to a cabin I saw up in the woods. Don’t worry. You’ll have food and whatever else you need.”

She folds her arms over her chest and stares out the front window. I’m sure she’s thinking all kinds of snarky things, but she doesn’t say any of them. Instead, she just stares. That’s fine by me. I don’t need to get attached to her or whatever she needs.

Besides, why the fuck is this my responsibility? “You’re not thinking, girl. The real world is hard. There’s work. There’s never enough time. You have to do what people tell you. I say marry the asshole and cash the checks, cause you won’t last out here.”

She rolls her eyes. “You don’t know me!”

I laugh. “Do I need to know you? You’re wearing high heels in a snowstorm, you’re carrying a purse with some foreign man’s name on it, and you saw a doctor for a scratch.”

“How long were you listening to us?”

“I was waiting outside for my turn but y’all never stopped talking.”

“Pull over.” There’s grit in her tone.

“No. It’s snowing, and we’re climbing a mountain. I’m not going to put us both at risk because you’re changing your mind again.”

“I’m not changing my mind about running. I’m changing my mind about giving you the antibiotics.”

I laugh. “Well, you can change your mind at the cabin. I can’t stop in the middle of an incline.”

She crosses her arms over her chest and sighs. “Why are you so miserable?”

“Misery is self-inflicted. I wouldn’t do that to myself.”

Now she’s laughing. “Wow! Insightful. Where’d you learn that? SpongeBob?”

“A book.” I grin. “My mind is my weapon. I read to keep it sharp.”

“You read?” Her tone is sarcastic, as though she’s not expecting a barbarian like me to have read an actual book. “What do you read?”

“Everything.”

“So you read romance?”

“I have.”

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever! What romance did you read?”

“Great Expectations. What was the last thing you read?”

She quiets. “Are you always this difficult?”
