The memory of my first time here comes to mind. Everyone thought we were on our honeymoon, but really we were here. He spent the whole time teaching me to obey him, teaching me how to act. It took weeks for me to recover from my lessons.

“Look at little miss submissive. Jonathan said I could have you when he's done punishing you.” Stephan sneers as he pulls my hair after they lay Maya on the floor of the elevator. Stephan kicks her in the ribs. “That's for kicking me in the balls, bitch.” I see her flinch and worry.

“Yes, sir,” I answer in a whisper, hoping to distract him.

The elevator grinds to a halt on the apartment floor and we exit. The idiots almost drop Maya again. We've barely crossed the threshold into the main room, and I slip off my boots, drop to my knees, and bow my head. I can do this. I rest my hands on my knees and wait.

I'm wearing a chambray button up dress cinched at the waist and leggings. My hair is in a loose braid down the side over my shoulder. He’ll hate my clothes and hair.

“Requiem in D Minor” begins playing through the speakers and my blood runs cold. I feel myself slipping back into that other girl. I need to remain strong. I focus on the sketch of him in my studio and the last time I heard this song. He's afraid of me, I repeat in my head as I wait.

“Well, well, well, look who finally remembered her place. Oh don't you look like a little slut.” He walks up and hits me across the side of my head. Pain explodes through my cheek and the side of my head. I bite my tongue to keep from crying out. I remember what Dr. Mason suggested and imagine drawings I want to do along with songs I like. I won’t become the victim again. I notice what’s left of his brandy glass as I fall over, making sure the gun doesn’t fall out or make a sound. He hit me hard enough to shatter the glass. Liquid slips into the small punctures on my temple and stings.

I rise back onto my knees and wait. He hits me on the side of my head again—with his pistol this time. Pain explodes in my ear. It takes a little longer to get back on my knees. My head is getting fuzzy. I can do this. I have fought this demon once, I will do it again.

Jonathan wobbles as he turns to Lawrence and Stephan and begins arguing with them. He’s been drinking for a while. I bide my time. I need to give both Maya and I a chance. We only have a short window of opportunity.

Maya is taken to the spare room. Jonathan walks back to me and stands over me with his feet braced apart, looking down at me.

“I see you're no longer pregnant with the bastard child. Did you lose it? That prick Nathan wouldn't tell me anything, just where to be and when. Like I take orders from his American southern boy ass, I'm so much better than him. He’s dead now by the way.”

Oh God, he's dead! What about Isabella? What’s happened to her?

“Anabel, you have a lot to make up for.” He sets the gun on the side table and picks up something else. The glint of light reflecting off the scalpel sends fear racing through my gut. I’m going to end up with more scars. He moves behind me and slides the blade down my back. “I need to slice you once, then I have another chore for you.” I don’t feel the scalpel enter my skin, but my dress slides open from my collar down the middle of my back and warm liquid runs down into the back of my leggings. The music repeats again, and I struggle to stay present. He steps in front of me. Blood drips from the blade onto the hardwood floor. “Look up and open your mouth, we're going to put those lips to use before I take more of your flesh.”

I'm not sure if I can do this now.

Joshua

“Can this plane go any faster? If we can't find them at this new flat, we've lost them.” I'm a walking crazy man.

Even Duncan isn't as bad as me. I need my angel, the darkness in my soul is coming back. I can feel the beast I set free earlier chomping to kill. I’ll kill anyone that hurts her. My mum and Michael watch me carefully. Dr. Mason has tried to get me to talk, but I only want my angel. Not even the feel of my daughter can calm me for very long, as soon as she starts to root around for food, I have to give her to Mum before I start shaking from anger. Isabella is bulking about the formula but we’ve been able to get some into her. Both of my girls are suffering, I will kill Jonathan with my bare hands. I know Ana’s strong enough to hold out until I get there, but what he’ll do to her, what she’ll endure is what makes me most angry.

I have my whole team here with me. It'll take all of them to hold Duncan and myself back if something happens to our girls. I wish I had said no shopping and taken her to the little chapel to marry her instead. I wish I could have made love to her one more time.

When I get her back in my arms, I won't ever take advantage of time again. The pilot calls for us to prepare for landing and I sit with my hands balled in my lap, trying to keep the tremors from my anger to a minimum.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Ana

I know what's going to happen next, I've been here before. I look up and school my features. I need to look weak, I need to be that girl again for just a moment longer. I think of Isabella and Joshua, hopefully they're safe. I look up into his eyes as the riding crop hits the side of my face. I feel the leather break my skin and blood oozes from the wound down my cheek.

“Took you long enough, cunt. When I give an order, you do it then. We don't have much time left.”

“Yes, sir,” I slur, and reach into my pocket, wiping the blood off on the inside so my hand doesn’t slip on the trigger. He undoes his trousers and pulls out his cock.

“I love you, Joshua and Isabella,” I whisper to myself, knowing I will probably die in the next few minutes if I don’t do this right.

“What did you say, bitch?” He hits me with the crop again. I try not to flinch back.

“Please, sir,” I beg.

I know my begging turns him on. His cock is in my face, and I hear a struggle from the other room. I worry I won't be quick enough.

“Sounds like that cunt friend of yours is finally getting her due,” he laughs.

I pull the gun from my pocket and shoot him in his ball bag. He collapses in front of me, incoherent garbled words fall from his lips. I rise and walk calmly to the spare room. As I pass the stereo, I shoot it, ending the song.
