Hard lips crashed down onto hers. His tongue stole into her mouth, demanding every inch with hot, passionate sweeps. And dear God, she gave it to him. She grabbed those stupid elf ears and arched into him when he groaned openly against her mouth. He snarled softly and bit her bottom lip until she whimpered for more.
“No more fighting,” he agreed raggedly, his fingers trembling on her face.
“I will never stop speaking my mind.” Her hands snuck beneath his shirt and found his defined abdomen.Hot.Smooth.Addictive. She buried her hands lower, hunting for the laces keeping his trousers on. “I am not that kind of woman.”
“Good.” His lips curved with mischief. He tweaked her nipple until another whimper shot out of her lips. She melted, clinging onto his hips and presented her neck. He licked along her vein, shooting fire into her loins. Then he captured her mouth again, using slow, torturous strokes.
Needing to breathe, she broke apart from him. Wild blue eyes landed on her throbbing lip. He swiped his thumb along the seam and stared at the blood on his finger. Shame entered his eyes.
Don’t you dare think about stopping.She lurched forward and kissed him again.
A strangled grunt of need rattled through his chest. He slipped his hand through the slit in her dress, stroked her thigh, and cupped her bottom. She hooked her leg around his waist, using it to tug him closer. They kissed so hard that they fell back through the curtain and into the staircase. He stopped them from falling and slammed her spine against the hollow’s inner wall, pinning her in place with his hips.
The desire he stoked in her blood was impossible to quench. But somehow, his kisses slowed and eventually stopped until he breathed heavily through his nose, forehead pressed to hers.
“No,” she begged, feeling her throat close up again. “Please don’t stop.”
“Nova.” His voice roughened to gravel.
“Don’t leave me to feel like this,” she whispered. “I don’t want to feel lost anymore.”
He pulled back with disbelief. “I’m never letting you go.”
“Then fuck me.” She rocked her hips into his erection, teasing him. But he ignored the bait, and her world was ending. “Please,Papi. Make me feel good.”
“I refuse to let our first time be a quick fuck inside the hollow of a tree during a wake.” Determination hardened his jaw. “And certainly not while you’re upset and confused.”
Tears brimmed in her eyes. The battle left her, and she nodded. Her leg dropped from around his waist. Her feet hit the floor, and she tried to step past him, but he pulled her back into his arms. He crushed her face to his chest and tightened his embrace.
“Leaf.” Her voice was muffled against his shirt, but the tighter she resisted, the tighter he held.“Let me go.”
“No.”
She kicked and bucked and tried to throw him off. She tossed insults at his chest, but he refused to budge. And with each passing second, her sanity unraveled. She turned her face so she could breathe, but her ear stuck over his heart, and everything he said returned to her.
I’m not him. His memories are gone. Too much. He sacrificed them… for her. Always for her.
Tears started to fall, and she was powerless to stop them.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, stroking her hair.
“You don’t know that.” Her voice tightened.
“Yeah, I do. And you need to grieve.”
“Such arrogance for someone with such a strong heart.”
It beat steadily beneath her ear. He believed it would be okay. Somehow, with his arms around her like this… she believed it too.
“I’m going to take care of you, Nova,” he promised. “I’m going to love you and keep you.”
Blue light fizzed up from the ground and spiraled around them. Energy tingled against Nova’s skin. Panic gripped her heart. She clenched Leaf’s shirt and whispered, “What’s happening?”
He wasn’t worried. Somehow, she felt his calm and… his self-disparaging amusement radiate into her.
“Leaf?” The blue was everywhere, sparking like fireworks and shooting from their bodies to light up the hollow.
His chest vibrated, and he shook his head, chuckling.
