“Likely the evening.”

“Why are you bored?”

“Fine. Avoid the question.”His mental sigh skates over my skin, erupting goosebumps.“Given the outcome of my recent Midnight Adventure, I am forbidden to flicker in public. Not that I was technically allowed before, but now we must travel by horse. The journey is tedious. No one appreciates my game of ‘Guess what our queen’s pussy tastes more like?’ Honey, or?—”

“Fox! You didn’t.”

His laughter is like sweet wine, warming my insides. “I did. Legion refused to partake, but Bodin surprisingly grumbled a list of ingredients, all from the fruit category.”

“You don’t even eat proper food.”

“Which made it even more entertaining.”

I cover my mouth to stop the chuckle, glance down at the Sluagh entry, and note that sensing sadness is listed as a skill. They are attracted to forlorn and aching souls,so be warned to guard your heart around them. They love to increase the suffering of those already in pain.

Except Fox just went out of his way to make me smile.

“A lot has happened this morning.”Swallowing, I tap the page.“Have you seen this bullshit?”

Lady Selene takes the lectern and starts speaking about increased Nightmare activity—more than is usual for this period of the Gentle Interlude. Focusing is almost impossible when Fox nibbles the sensitive skin beneath my ear while simultaneously reading over my shoulder and turning the page with his phantom hands.

The feeling on my skin dissipates. A silence extends.

“Fox?”I check to see if he’s disappeared.“Have you ever seen the Sluagh in the codex before?”

“No.”His reply is curt.

“You don’t sound happy.”

“It’s a message and a warning. The queen knows one of the Six has broken their seal, someone other than Styx.”

Shit.“What’s the warning?”

He hesitates. I sense he’s considering hiding the information from me. Or perhaps his physical form consults with the others.

“To remain hidden,”he admits.“Educating the public means if we expose our true natures, we will be hunted and killed. Or rather, they will attempt to kill us. I see this listing needs an update regarding our weaknesses. So sad they struggle to get anything right.”

My quill lifts, dips into an inkwell, and scratches a line through the weakness listed as “Sunlight.”

“Stop it.”I snatch the quill and glance around to see if anyone noticed. But the class is enthralled with Lady Selene’s lecture. Geraldine, however, sits back in her seat, not bothering to open her codex but staring into space.

A band constricts around my chest. She looks defeated.

“Hmm.”Fox’s mental tone is amused.“Our feeding habits also need updating.”

“Updating?”I glance at the codex.“You mean you actually used to eat babies?”

He gives a wistful sigh.“Those were the days.”

What?

“But you don’t now, right?”No response.“Fox. You don’t now, right?”

At first, his silence is worrisome, but then I feel echoes of his amusement pulse through my mind. The bastard is laughing and trying to hide it.

“You’re so dead when you get home.”

“Promise?”A nip over his mating mark shoots heat down to my lower abdomen.
