I blink, shocked at the emotion in his declaration.

Fox’s otherness suddenly evaporates, and he is the picture of faerie nobility once more. Except the wildness hasn’t left his eyes.

“Fine.” He stalks toward the staircase leading down. “I won’t kill him.”

“Fox!” I try to run after him, but Legion blocks me with a palm to my sternum.

Dark eyes look down at me. “Let him go.”

“But he’ll...” My eyes widen. “What will he do?”

“Remind the nobility why the House of Shadow is not to be messed with.”

Chapter

Fifty-Five

FOX

Don’t kill. Don’t kill. Don’t kill.

I stalk the Nexus path toward the House of Stone. Exhibitors scurry out of the way, their eyes downcast, their minds whirling with fear.

Don’t kill. Don’t kill. Don’t kill.

Blood.

I stop and stare. Blood on the footpath.

Hers.

My fingers curl into fists, popping my knuckles.

Don’t kill. Don’t kill. Don’t kill.

My neck cracks. My fingers flex. It’s fine. I will have a nice little chat with the imbecile. That’s all. A manic laugh bubbles out of me. I’m not a monster. I canchat.

Straightening my collar, I continue down the path. Quite proud of myself, really. I arrive at the House of Stone Tower the picture of decorum.

But then I stand at the door and sense the souls inside. They humiliated my queen. Hurled insults at her. Forced her to walk naked and laughed at her.

Don’t kill. Don’t kill. Don’t kill.

A shaky exhale leaves my lips. No one needs to get hurt. I will simply walk in, up the stairs, and take her pendant back. The one she almost drowned for. Breathe in. Breathe out.

I plant my palm on the door and shove it open. Wood bangs against stone, startling exhibitors inside.

“Leave,” I snarl and stalk up the staircase. More souls in my way—more juicy, tender souls.

Don’t kill. Don’t kill.A female bows and apologizes for breathing. My lips curve.Definitelydon’t kill that one.

Another flight up. More steps. More scurrying souls I growl at to leave. I am almost proud of myself by the time I land on the Shadow’s accommodation level. He is a bulky thing with more muscles than brains and does not avert his gaze. He stares directly into my eyes.

Don’t kill.

“Can I help you, sir?”

He knows his Radiant humiliated my queen. What kind of fool would stand in the way of my retribution? I am... astounded.
