Fox warned me this might happen, but I never expected them to forget their Sixth. Fox stares hard at the air before him. He takes a deep breath. Then another.

“It will be fine.” I squeeze his hand.

Legion moves on, as though Styx’s name was never uttered. “Explain yourself, Fox. What happened at the tower?”

Fox abruptly stands. “I’ll explain in the morning.”

He takes my hand and lifts me from my seat.

“Let’s go,”he sends.“I don’t have the energy to deal with this tonight.”

Fair enough. I give the others an apologetic smile. Varen jumps to his feet, eyes wide. “When a worker bee stings a threat to the hive, it rips away part of their body.”

“Varen,”Emrys warns. “Sit back down.”

But Varen jogs after us. At the door, he takes my wrist in a painful grip, forcing me to look at him. My heart aches at his sadness. “They die,” he insists, shaking my wrist. “They die!”

“No one is dying.” Fox’s smooth, calming voice washes over both of us. He gently cups Varen’s jaw and stares deeply into his eyes. “I promise. No one is dying. Now, be a good little honeybee and let the others clean you up. I’ll give you some more bee bread tonight.”

“Bee bread?” Varen repeats with a frown.

“Is he okay?”I send Fox.

“Just a little confused, that’s all.”

“Bee bread,” Fox repeats.

Varen nods. He relaxes but then says with a warning tone, “After drone bees copulate with their queen, their explosive climaxripstheir genitalia out.”

Fox’s hands slide off Varen’s jaw with an unsettled look my way. “Shit, pet. My cock will blow off if you’re not careful.”

Flames scald my cheeks.

“Fox,” I chide.

Bodin arrives to corral Varen back to the table, but first warns Fox, “Tomorrow.” He slides his glare to me. “And you. Training at dawn.”

Fox threads his fingers through mine and walks me back to his room. We fall into companionable silence, but an unsettled feeling remains, even when we arrive.

“You don’t think Varen was trying to tell us something, do you?” I ask at his door. “He makes sense sometimes.”

His lips twitch. “You worried about my cock, pet?”

“Har har.” I squeeze his hand. “You know what I mean.”

He tugs me into his room and spins to face me with a heart-stopping grin. “If you could do anything tonight, what would you do?” He pulls me close, assumes a dancing pose, and swings me deftly around his room. “To fly? A dance in the clouds?”

I laugh, shaking my head. “I can’t believe I told you my dream.”

We stop dancing, and he dangles something sparkling before my eyes. “Or would you like to reunite with your special friend?”

“Tinger.” Tears burn my eyes. “Thank you. Again.”

My heart aches as he turns me and loops the cord around my neck. I hold the glimmering ball of energy to my heart. My inability to let go of my friend has caused so much trouble. The guilt gnaws at my soul.

When he’s done, Fox brushes the hair from my nape and presses his lips to my skin. He asks again, “What would you do?”

I am filled with raw emotion. Trembling with it. First Varen. Now this strange offer to go out and have fun? Twisting in his arms, I slide my hands around his neck and look into his eyes.
