I glance at Loren, who fumbles with her lip and pretends she’s not listening for my answer.

A few years ago, I’d probably have decked Landry or any other man who dared to call Blake Bourgeois whipped. Six months ago, I’d at least have offered a crude yet witty rebuttal. But now, it feels like everything I could ever want is lying on that exam table beside me. I’m beginning to think that Loren and these babies are all I really need, and I’ve just been too stupid and scared to realize this could be better than any of the other empty accomplishments I’ve been striving for all these years.

“Maybe I’ve always been whipped,” I say, staring down at her and watching her cheeks flush. Then I pull her hand up to my mouth for another kiss.

“Whoa, not in front of the kids, man,” Landry tells me, gesturing at the sonogram monitor and making us all laugh. “So, Lo, have you told Mom yet?” he asks, effectively changing both the subject and the mood again.

Rowan’s still quiet as he continues the ultrasound, tapping on a keyboard and taking measurements.

“No,” Loren admits after a while.

“You really should?—”

“I’ll tell her if and when I’m ready.”

He huffs. “Your plan is to just let her figure it out when she sees you, then?”

“She’d have to show up for something in order for that to happen, though, wouldn’t she?” Loren fires back, and I give her hand a gentle squeeze.

“Right,” Landry mumbles. Then he steps over and picks up Loren’s chart.

“Hey, I never said you could look in there,” she protests, but it’s too late.

He raises his brow and glares at me. “Guess you two really have been dating for longer than I thought.” Loren’s face flushes again, but she stays quiet. He gazes up at the monitor for a while. “Baby A’s smaller.”

“Row—Dr. LaFleur already told us that,” Loren says sarcastically.

“And what about your regular OB-GYN? Didn’t he notice?”

“My midwife—her name’s Tenley, maybe you know her? Anyway, my midwife is the one who diagnosed the placenta previa and sent me here.”

“Wait, Tenley Robin’s back?” he asks quickly.

“Yeah, she’s a DNP now too,” Loren adds, smirking at me.

“Nice. Maybe I’ll look her up next time I’m in town.”

I snort, and Loren chokes back a laugh. “Heads-up—Nurse Tenley goes by a different name these days,” I tell Landry.

“What, did she get married or something?”

I clear my throat. “Yeah. Or something.”

Landry looks confused, and Loren laughs out loud this time. “She’s Mrs. JD Bourgeois now. She’s also pregnant, for the record.”

He grimaces and glares at me again. “You guys aren’t afraid to date up, are you?”

I grin at him in return. “No, we are not.”

Landry scoffs and mumbles something about my brother and I ruining everything while Loren wipes the gel off her belly. Rowan directs us to stop in the lobby for more information and paperwork, and I thank him again as we shake hands.

“Of course. I’ll see you both next month,” he says with a genuine smile.

I guess he’s all right, as long as he keeps my girls safe.

“So, you guys still want to grab lunch together?” Landry asks, following us out.

“Sure,” Loren replies with a sigh. “Just text us an address.”
