Your girl’s totally flustered over there. I think she might be turning green and everything.

Loren Reed

*thumbs up emoji*

I narrow my eyes at her response, trying to remember whether that emoji still means “okay,” or if the kids have turned it into something more insulting or inappropriate by now.

I wave it off and continue watching against my better judgment as my brother leans in and brushes a strand of hair away from Loren’s face. And I don’t even need to look Tenley’s way to know exactly how she’s feeling right now.

Loren must have conveyed my message to JD, because he backs away to aim a cocky grin at Tenley before he closes the car door. But Loren keeps their act going by rolling down the window and reaching out for his hand, and I can’t help but stare at the spot on her wrist where he’s rubbing his thumb over her smooth, creamy skin.

And my mind is instantly overtaken by a concerning amount of violent thoughts, all of them of the Cain and Abel nature.

I avert my eyes before I’m tempted to pick up a rock and lob it at my brother’s head—for the record, I’d totally hit my target, since I’ve still got a decent arm and JD’sgros têteis hard to miss—and I notice Tenley and Ethan in a heated discussion.

At least I can rest assured that JD has successfully grabbed Tenley’s attention, which means there’s no reason to dwell on my reaction to seeing JD and Loren together. I don’t need to worry about it happening again, if the look on Tenley’s face is any indication.

I bring up the thread with Loren again.

Blake Bourgeois

I think she’s good and jealous.

You can probably stop now.

I know how unpleasant this must be for you, especially since JD gets gassy under pressure.

I venture a glance at Loren again, just in time to catch her looking down at her phone and stifling a laugh. Then she says something to JD, and he glares angrily in my direction before walking off toward Tenley and Ethan.

Loren Reed

It’s actually no worse than his brother’s tendency to put his foot in his mouth every time he’s challenged.

Blake Bourgeois

You mean you’re not a fan of my peanut butter and chocolate apologies? After all this time?

Loren Reed

I’m always a fan of Reese’s.

It’s my feelings for the brother in question that have wavered over the years.

Blake Bourgeois

And here I was, thinking you’d admire the kind of man who isn’t afraid to admit when he’s wrong.

Especially since you’ve always been so good at making me look like an ass.

Loren Reed

Now, Blake, we both know that’s not true.

You don’t need my help for that.

I’m still smiling down at the screen when the sound of gravel crunching beneath JD’s feet brings me back. He stomps over to Tenley’s car, shaking his head and clenching his jaw. I reluctantly put my phone away and walk over to assess the situation, just as Ethan comes around with Tenley trailing behind him. She looks guilty as she stares down at her feet.

What the heck did I miss?
