Or maybe I do?

I’m not sure yet, because I can’t remember it happening before, at least not in my adult life.

She forces herself to look away, and I do the same.

“I’m not jealous, if that’s what you’re implying. I just wanted to vet the guy,” I say after a while. “Her brother set this up. And Landry’s always been a dick to her, so I’m not sure I trust his judgment.”

“That’s all though, right?”

I let out a measured exhale, trying to turn on the charm again. “Of course. You know me. Women like me too much for me to like only one woman.”

She rolls her eyes. “Sometimes I wish you liked yourself a little more, Blake.”

“Come on. I take great care of this temple,” I reply, tapping my chest before taking a long draught of my drink and making her hum disapprovingly.

“What happened, man?” Aaron leans over from the other side of Jada. “Couldn’t lure your girl away?”

I shake my head and put my glass down. “I guess I’m off my game tonight.”

Then Aaron laughs and starts to tell us a joke, and I attempt to push Loren out of mind. But I can’t help glancing over intermittently and noticing how well she and Rowan seem to be getting along. After about thirty minutes of struggling to redirect my attention, I give up and pull out my phone.

Blake

I hate to be the one to break it to you, Reed. But you don’t like that guy. He seems nice, but he’s not your type.

I watch as she lifts her phone and frowns. Then she sets it down and ignores it.

So I send her another message.

Blake

I’m serious. Your brother basically set you up with my brother. And we both know golden retrievers bore you.

Hell, I bet the guy has his favorite jorts and a pair of white New Balances set aside for your second date.

She’s visibly frustrated when she reads the second message, but she does take a second to respond.

Loren R

Leave me alone, Blake.

Now I’m the one frowning at my phone.

Blake

I didn’t want to be the one to say this, but there’s no such thing as a nice doctor who’s still single at his age. Wth is wrong with this guy if he has to drive two hours to get laid?

Promise me you won’t leave with him? I’ll bring you back myself before I let you go home alone with Dr. Red Flag.

Loren R

Do you really think Landry would set me up with someone dangerous?

And I’m not that stupid. I drive myself to first dates, and I never invite strange men into my home.

But thanks, your concern is endearing. *unamused face emoji*

I smile. I can’t deny that I’m slightly relieved. But it’s only because I care about Loren’s well-being in general, and not because I’m jealous or anything.
