I stifle a grin. “See you at the reception in a few minutes?”

She lifts a shoulder. “Take your time. If you rush, your zipper might get stuck, which could delay you for a while. But, I mean, if such an unfortunate event were to occur, I’d probably just create a diversion by asking the caterers to start serving the food a little early. I’m sure no one will mind, if they even notice.”

Blake waltzes over with one of the girls in his arms. “Are we heading out?”

“Yep, I’ll take that,” Tenley replies, extricating Charley. “You’ve been reassigned to wardrobe-change duty.”

Blake’s eyes meet mine, and his lips curl into a sly smile as he salutes her. “Aye-aye, Nurse Tenley.”

I assume the position as my husband lifts me again, just as JD and Landry approach. “You don’t have to actually carry her to the truck, you know,” JD snickers. “Wouldn’t want you to hurt yourself there, bro.”

“Wait, where are you two going?” Landry asks, eyeing us suspiciously.

“Wardrobe malfunction,” Tenley answers for us. “She needs to swap dresses, but this one’s got a tricky zipper. It may take a while, so we should probably just go on and get the reception started without them.”

“We’ll, uh … we’ll be there in a few,” Blake assures them when Landry frowns.

JD pats Landry on the back. “Don’t worry, that zipper’s been stuck for close to a year. It’ll only take a couple of tugs to loosen it up.”

“Oh, but I’m good with zippers.” Blake smirks at me, and I shiver again. “Because I take my time.”

“Yeah, but this is your favorite zipper,” JD continues, waving his hand. “Prior zipping experience doesn’t apply when you’re this overeager. I bet it’ll be over much faster than you think.”

Blake tilts his head to the side. “He’s got a point.”

“I’ll need a couple more rounds of zipping, anyway,” I offer. “Since I have to put on the second dress and take it off later tonight. But we won’t need to rush the last one.”

JD chuckles loudly as Landry wrinkles his nose in disgust. “I hate it here,” he announces.

Then my friend Daisy passes by, offering a quick “Congratulations” before she turns to ask Landry for a ride, and I watch as his expression softens.

“Eh, you’ll learn to love it,” I tell him.
