My eyes widen. “Would I—what?”

Loren lifts a shoulder and shoots me an apologetic look. “It’s just, I’d kind of like to get it over with, you know? We’re already here, and if you still want to beat JD to it, you probably don’t have much time.”

I can’t believe I’m actually getting propositioned, although it feels more like a business arrangement than a date. Or maybe she’s making a pity offer after hearing me accidentally blurt out that I’ve never kissed a girl.

Regardless, I’mdown.

I wasn’t lying when I said I thought Loren was cute, though I’ve never admitted that to any of my friends before, because she’s kind of … different, not to mention that her older brother is a total douchebag. But I still like that she’s not afraid to be herself, and that she’s smarter and funnier than most girls our age.

“So I should kiss you, like, right now?”

“Only if you want to.” She looks down at her hands. “And don’t worry, no one has to know, even if we don’t go through with it. I won’t tell anyone.”

It’s getting harder to hide my nerves now, and I’m almost struggling to breathe. “Are you sure?”

She rolls her eyes. “It’s just a kiss, Blake. It doesn’t have to mean anything.”

“Okay.” I gulp.

Loren nods and turns her body so our knees are touching, but she’s so petite that I have to lean down to meet her. I clear my throat and reach over to cup her face gently, and her eyes flutter closed. She rests her hand on my arm as she waits patiently for me to close in the space between us. Then I inhale deeply as if I’m preparing to go underwater, unsure of whether I’m supposed to hold my breath the whole time or what, and I brush my lips against hers.

They’re soft—reallysoft. In fact, her lips feel nicer than I imagined.

I lean in, pressing against her a little more firmly, and my head gets all fuzzy. But she pulls away abruptly, leaving me there with my chest heaving and my lips still puckered.

“Well,” she mumbles, her fingertips drifting to her mouth. “That wasn’t so bad. Right?”

I blink, suddenly feeling the urge to run my thumb along her bottom lip too. “No. It wasn’t.” My voice cracks awkwardly, and I die a little on the inside. “Uh, thanks, I guess?”

She nods. “I’m glad we could help one another.”

“Yeah,” I agree, still staring at her mouth. “But, um, aren’t you worried about …” I swallow hard again and cringe. “You know, tongue?”

“You mean, how to use it and stuff?” she asks quietly, and I nod entirely too eagerly. “Sure, I suppose. But I already kind of forced you to do this, so I didn’t want to?—”

“I don’t mind,” I say quickly, and the corner of her mouth turns up. “I mean, we might as well, right? So that we’ll know what to do the next time, when it really counts.”

“Okay,” she breathes, already leaning in.

I hold back a groan as our lips meet again, cradling the back of her head in one hand and sliding the other down to her lower back. I’m running purely on instinct as I open my mouth, but she follows. I use about all of the self-control I can muster to slowly trace the inner edge of her bottom lip with my tongue. Her fingers rake through my hair as I do it again, this time venturing farther into her mouth. Andman, is this not the best thing I’ve ever done.

She lets out a small sigh, and it registers somewhere in my brain that she’s enjoying it too. And I really like the idea of being responsible for making her feel good enough to emit a sound like that. I am officially hooked on this whole kissing thing.

I push my luck by inching my hand down her back to cup her butt, and when she doesn’t seem to mind, I grasp a handful of her to pull her even closer as I deepen my exploration of her mouth. She clutches at my hair more tightly in response, then slips her tongue between my lips and does some kind of maneuver in which it curls against mine. I can’t help myself as a strange growl rumbles through my chest, and I swear in that moment this must be why people get married, because I would be perfectly content to continue on with her like this for the rest of my life.

I’m plotting on how I can slide her over and into my lap when she backs away again, our lips making a smacking sound as she breaks the seal between us.

“Did you hear that?” she asks, both of us breathing hard.

“Huh?” It’s all I can get out. My head is still foggy, reminding me of the time when my friend Jase had stolen a bottle from his parents’ liquor cabinet. But Loren tastes so much sweeter and warms my chest better than the whiskey did.

“I thought I heard my brother calling me,” she explains, rising to look out of the window again.

“Oh, maybe he’s looking for you?” I offer as I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand. It’s obvious I haven’t recovered as quickly as she has.

“I should probably …” She bites her lip and gestures toward the door hesitantly.

“Yeah, uh, same.” But leaving her is the absolute last thing I want to do.
